Guys, I just noticed a frost advisory posted for a large chunk of you that might not be expecting it.

http://www.wunderground.com/severe.asp

http://www.intellicast.com/National/Temperature/FrostFreeze.aspx

Eastern Nebraska, most of Iowa, and a few chunks of northern Kansas and western Illinois.

Also, for us in the St. Louis area, I suspect we are next for tomorrow night. The lows have been adjusted down to 36F tomorrow night.

I have a theory....when the Wx man starts "tweaking" his forecast, it will be worse than he adjusts for. In this case, it may get colder than they are predicting. If you, like me, have already put out your tomatoes and peppers, get them covered.

Just sayin'.

Thanks BBG! Our predicted overnight low has gone down to 37 here in Oklahoma. Just tucked in my eggplant and hoping for the best with my little corn seedlings. This sure is unexpected in early May!

Our weather guy said we might get a hard frost Thursday morning. Ugh! If I had any babies to cover, I certainly would!

I plan to cover my tomatoes and peppers tonight, as this block of colder air is slipping farther south.

Any time the temps get into the mid-30s, I plan to cover them up, especially if I have blossoms. Such is the life of walking the thin line with Mother Nature.

37 in OK is just nuts this time of year.

All I can say is that better be winter's last "hurrah". I am so done with being cold. I covered up everything last night (except the peas that are starting to climb the trellis) just to be safe. Tomatoes and peppers are getting hardened off this week so hopefully I can plant in the garden on Sunday as planned (that is if I don't kill them - never done the hardening off thing but I have Quiltbea's excellent instructions so I think I'm in good hands Very Happy ). My Gram always says she won't plant tomatoes before Mother's day and this year, I guess she really is right!

I also finally found the "TOR-CON" thing on the weather channel website last night. That is nifty! As one who used to get physically sick as a child anytime severe storms were coming, I'm happy to have one more tool to obsess over in my quest to "know when they are coming". Wink

Agreed with TOR-CON. At first, I thought it a gimmick. But, I actually really, really like it now. It just gives me a heads up as to when I need to be concerned.

Here are the areas with chances of frost and freeze. Y'all up in Wisconsin have to just be going nuts. Into May and you are dealing with subfreezing temps still. Too warm for ice fishing, too cold to SFG comfortably. I'd be going bananas.

Frost tonight??!! 671790 Yes, BBG, those of us in MN by the river are going bananas, too! It was warm enough last week that I took the covers off the garden and didn't get around to putting them back on (life with 5 young kids gets in the way sometimes). The weather said overnight temps in the low 30s....this morning at 6 am it was 24 and there was frost everywhere! I don't have any warm-weather plants out, yet, and the rest seem to be OK. But now there looks like something is eating the leaves on my tiny pea plants! AAARRRGHH!!!!!

I have something dining on my broccoli plants, too. You know, I see what Mel says about not planting in rows. The two broccoli in another bed have holes in the leaves while the two broccoli in the main bed are fine. If I planted them in with the others, I'd have holes in all 4.

I found out the coolest thing in the world. And it's working so far! I actually read about it over the winter and started saving milk bottles, litter sized soda bottles, juice containers. Then I forgot all about it. So here's the deal, you cut out the bottom of the jugs and place it over your plant making a small greenhouse. The lid can come off to allow for airflow and cooling it down during the day. I still haven't been able to get a wagon cover to work when I remembered my stock pile in the garage. I started a few days ago and I actually have healthy tomatoes that came up! I'm pretty excited. Our temps have been below normal, as I complained about last week, but they are just hovering around freezing. I don't know how well it would work getting to much colder. My favorite bottles have been Simply Orange :o) They are thick see through and have a nice easy top to come off while reaching across the bed.

Good luck on your bug problem now :o(
