Grubs?

I was leveling the bricks where my firepit sits when I found these icky white worms. I think they're grubs. Are they? And if so, should I be worried about my SFQ? There will be landscaping paper underneath the mix. I'm renting an apartment here, so I really can't treat the lawn if they are grubs....

Yes, those are what I call grubs. However, I don't know if they do a lot of damage to an SFG. I know they will with lawn grasses at times. I have never personally had trouble with them, but I read about them constantly.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable will jump in here soon.

So they are the bad kind of lawn grub. And there is way more than 10 per square foot. That saucer full was from under three bricks. (I had to stop my cat from playing with them and maybe eating one. Ewww!) Does anyone know if I should worry about the vegetables in my SFG?

Howdy Muffin:

The good news is that grubs make wonderful fish bait. The bad news is that grubs eat plant roots. The good news is that most SFG's with a weed barrier will not have any grubs if the forumila for Mel Mix was followed faithfully. If you did not see any when you mixed your MM you should be just fine. If you see a plant fall over for no apparent reason pull it up and check the mix under the plant. If a grub is there replant the square and then go fishing. Enjoy your garden and harvest.

I can fish with worms, crickets, the pretend stuff, but these bad boys? Ick. I'll see if my dad wants a jar though, he's a fisherman. Razz

Thanks for filling me on my my veggies. They aren't in the ground yet, I was planning on putting them in today, but waited when I saw the grubs. I'll give it another week when I can put down another layer of protection. I'll do newspapers and then my weed liner. That should keep them out from the bottom up. Won't do anything from the top down, but I can keep an eye on them.
