O.K. so after fighting with the nylon trellis I bought at Home Depot, I HATE the stuff! So far I have it on two of my three conduit frames. One of them doesn't go all the way to the SFG box.

Are their alternatives? And for those who make your own, could you tell me how to do it?

ROFL You must have fat thumbs like me! Very Happy One thing that helped me get started was to use zip ties across the top and down a couple feet on one side. That held everything in place so I could figure out how to tie the trellis string itself to the conduit.

This is the first year I've tried a string trellis. I'm trying it...just to say I have.

I've been very happy using 6x6 concrete reinforcing wire for trellises.

Making it is ugly ...... basically rent the complete first season of your favorite show and plan on watching it while you work, so you don't completely lose your sanity.

Only thing more brutal is making your own out of coated wire instead of nylon.

Boffer, what made you go with concrete reinforcing wire to begin with? Just curious. I'll be putting in my boxes next weekend and I'm trying to decide what kind of trellises to use for my tomatoes and cucumbers (and maybe Sugar Babies watermelons). Thanks!

Thanks for the softball! Very Happy I happened to have eleven 8x20 foot panels on hand. It was that simple!

But I love the stuff. It makes fences, and round tomato cages, and flat trellises, and arched trellises, and quick 'hoop' covers, and cube boxes, and ?????

One has to like the rusty metal look though; painting is not feasible. There was another thread recently where someone was talking about the benefits of the rust elements that were carried into the MM by the rain. I don't know much about that, but it sounds good!

Then there's the end of season cleanup. All of those pea and bean vines that need to be cleaned up. Oh man, I hit 'em with my propane weed torch, and they're gone right now! Can't do that on a netted trellis! cheers

So here is how I did it.

Take left side of conduit frame and weave the netting on to it -go inside one string and outside the next all the way up the frame. One side done.

Next, stretch the netting across the frame and kinda hook it over the screws of the top right corner. Cut the netting to size, cutting it close to the next square. Unhook it from screws at the top right corner

Now, unscrew the top bar and put it through the top of the netting kinda rolling it over in each square. Reattach it to the left side.

Now stretch it tight and start tying knots down the right side. The top row comes up being a bit center, but it sures goes much faster than tying knots all the way around.

@boffer - I like the concrete wire idea, but it was too expensive when I priced it, given all the other costs in the first year. I will most likely add that next year!

I went thru the same thing..really could've used a second pair of hands to hold out the netting trellis while I staple-gunned it to the 2x4 studs...but, made it through...whew! Got it done and hope I don't have to do it again anytime soon! Home Depot was the only place I could find that netting, as well. They had two different types of packs on the stand...both said 5'x15', one was in a little longer pkg, the other was in a wider pkg....Lo and Behold! One went up to 6' x 12' and the other was 5' x 20'....guess the netting maker went a little hog wild!

Where did you find it at HD? With the garden stuff or somewhere else? I need to make a trip there tomorrow.

Our store down here had it inside by the bulbs and seeds...not with the outside stuff. Lowe's and Stine's nor Wal-Mart had the netting...when I asked they gave blank stares and had no idea what I was talking about...sheesh!

Thanks-- I'll check by the seeds at our store. I'm used to the blank stare when I go to HD. I usually avoid it for that reason, but I've heard they have innoculant for peas (since I'm getting them in kinda late, I figure that's a good idea), and then the netting as well....so hopefully I have better luck there tomorrow than I normally do!

I have a 2x4 & 4x4 frame I stapled my trellis netting to. That worked out pretty easily, until I came to a part in the last corner of the netting that reminded me of an Escher drawing. I think the netmaker got sleepy or high or something. Thankfully, I didn't need that section.

My 5' x 15' net ended up more like 5' x 12'. Grrr...

Yeah, here they had it at HD right with the seeds and I found it at a local garden center but the Lowe's guy looked at me like I had 2 heads after trying to point out the tomato towers to me.

Hmmm....could you possibly just weave the top and sides of the conduit through the netting before connecting the conduit together? That way no tying would be involved.

My netting is getting delivered today so maybe I'll try it and let ya'll know.

Great idea - only thing I am not sure of is if the spacing will be correct to create pull the slack out of the net. Given the elasticity of what I am using it would probably work - I'll have to give it a try - I have two more trellis to string up for cukes...

Very clever! I only have 3 of my 7 trellises built, and it is no problem to undo a few screws on those three if it works on the next ones!

Weaving worked for me! I started by weaving the top first, then weaved one side and attached the conduit together...pulled tight and weaved other side and attached the other conduit side. Did not have to tie it at all. I did have to trim the excess off the second side.

Putting up netting; @#$%! P1030510

ETA: This would probably look better with the squared corners but I hadn't thought about weaving it until after I bent the corners. Plus I didn't have corner connectors.

I just stuck 3 staples in the bottom to hold the netting down. One in the middle and one on each side. A thumbtack, screw or nail would work perfect too...
