putting in the garden this weekend...

Finals are finally over and now I can devote the next three weekends to something other than writing papers and studying.

LALALALALALAAAAAAAAAAAA!

So I am going to put in my garden. My wonderful husband finished it for me on Saturday. It is a bit larger than the 4x4 recommended, but I will probably just put a "plank across it to reach inward, OR I will just plant carrots there and worry about harvest next year.

So my question now becomes: am I too late for seeds? Will I just have to put in store bought plants and then start planning my winter garden? Id like to have something to show for our hard work this year, and something to show our two boys...

It would really help us answer your questions if we know where you live. Your region will affect how much time you have before it gets too cold for heat-loving plants.

I thought it was in my profile info... I am in Northern Virginia. I would like to put in tomatoes, beans, mellons, strawberries, herbs and some flowers. As this is our first year, i really dont want to go crazy and burn myself out. We have an automatic sprinkler system, so watering isnt going to be an issue.

What kind of melons?

Watermelons, canteloupes, muskmelons or honeydews (inodorous melons)?

Newer hybrids or heirlooms?

Howdy - I lived in Manassas for a few years. Glad to be back in SoDak but I sure miss the restaurants in DC, No Va and Baltimore! Dang - there was a Thai joint in right in downtown Manassas that I loved...seafood...mmmm...oh and I miss Indian food! BIG TIME...but I digress...

Anyhow, as a super newbie that started some seeds indoors a few weeks ago (onions and broccoli – they did not fair well, but my peppers are doing great – despite the best efforts of my cat Chunk!) and who plans on starting some seeds out (carrots, lettuce, beets, spinach…) in the next few weeks, I can tell you it has been a lot of work. Totally worth it and exciting but if getting burnt out is already on your radar (I remember being in school and working full time - you are most likely in need of a break) and if you are not prohibited by the cost of buying plants ready to go into the garden, perhaps just plan on doing a few seeds outside, you know the ones that cannot be transplanted anyway and buy transplants.

I don't know if that is helpful to you or not but what will def help you is sticking with this site - there's a lot of great info provided by helpful and friendly individuals. putting in the garden this weekend... 73140

When I lived in Fairfax, I planted my garden on Memorial Day Weekend (had 3 days off work) I didn't do SFG but I did take advantage of the fences around the space. My staples in those days were tomatos in big, tall cages, cukes on the fence, pole beans on trellis, squash on the fence, mustard greens, turnips (for the greens not the roots), collards and peppers.

Didn't try melons, but summer is the time for them. So yes, you are right in time for a nice summer garden.
