peppers
Probably not the thing to say in here but in the past I have always put smaller tomato cages around my peppers just for the mechanical protection from me walking around nocking branches and peppers off the plants. I grow a bunch of kids but particularly love Trinidad Perfume a small yellow variety that sounds like a hot one but has NO heat. It is a long season 80-90 day variety. It is absolutely awesome in salads and stir fry with a unique flavor like no other I have tried. A picture, description and seeds can be found at http://www.tomatogrowers.com/cgi-bin/search.pl

Re: 2011 Peppers! Wha'cha growin'?!
I'm doing 3 kinds of sweet peppers this year - Flavorburst, Giant Marconi, and Bananarama. They're all in the same box - this is the first I've heard that it can affect flavor. Hopefully it won't have any effect - guess we'll see.

Re: 2011 Peppers! Wha'cha growin'?!
I am growing orange bell, green bell, TAM Jalepeno and sweet banana. The bell peppers and jalepeno finally appear to be making some kind of progress. The sweet banana look exactly the same as when I planted them. I really don't care for bell pepper but I wanted to try to grow it. I like to cook with hot peppers and eat banana peppers so I hope those work out. I plan to do more hot peppers later.

cayenne, jalepeno and golden habenero. I was at a shop yesterday and the guy was showing me an indoor gardening set up with a chocolate habenero growing in it. I told him I had started goldens, he offered to trade seeds with me. So it looks like I may try a chocolate habenero as well.
and a variety of colors of bells.

Re: 2011 Peppers! Wha'cha growin'?!
Camprn,
I LOVE pablanos! They are probably one of my favorites. Unfortunately, I'm not growing them this year. I couldn't find a local source for the seeds.
I was really trying to buy locally, but this is not working out for me. Next year I'm going to hit the seed catalogs for sure...

Re: 2011 Peppers! Wha'cha growin'?!
Lavender Debs sent me some Czech Black seeds, a jalepeno type with deep purple fruit, and I now have 8 little seedlings popping up in my vermiculite.
I have hope for peppers this summer.
Lavender Debs wrote:I should send you a package of Czech Black peppers (Uprising Seed). Last year the only Tomatoes that I was able to pick red were Siltz....as you well know it was an exceptionally chilly summer BUT I got a nice harvest of black jalapeno type peppers from this plant. I'm putting in 5 of them this year. Gypsy didn't give me but one pepper out of the same garden. However I did just read that they turn red when they are fully ripe. I did not see any of those last year. Not real hot but you can tell they have jalapenos in the woodpile (so to speak).

This was August 15 and was probably the biggest pepper that day. I think I got just under a dozen from this plant. We went on vacation a couple of days later and came back to a heavily loaded, very pretty pepper plant.
I have hope for peppers this summer.

Re: 2011 Peppers! Wha'cha growin'?!
Well, I'm a little scared to post in this thread as when the tomato one started out I was only planning to grow 2 plants of tomatoes. I now have 6 kinds growing and ready for transplant in a couple of weeks.
Right now I'm just planning to grow 1 plant of Mirasol as I got some free seeds from Wintersown and I figured, why not and 1 jalapeno plant. But after reading this thread, I'm sure that will mutliply just like the tomatoes....

They're called poblanos when their green and young, and called ancho chilies when dried. Poblanos are "mildly" hot, although sometimes you get one that has an extra kick. Anchos are hotter (the heat concentrates when their dried).
This year we're growing jalapenos, poblanos, California Wonders, and an early sweet bell called Ace Hybrid. May get more varieties/colors once I visit my local greenhouse.
Last year I grew a couple of Thai chili plants, just for fun...and to fill some empty squares . They were absolutely sooooo hot we could not eat them. The teeny little red chilies looked so pretty though, and no bugs bothered them -- ha!

Growing a local heirloom Datil hot pepper, purple bell, two that were simply marked red bell , jalapeno, and one hot chillie III. Love the Datil, it seems to be a love'em or hate 'em thing with those.

Re: 2011 Peppers! Wha'cha growin'?!
Wow quiltbea that is quite an array of peppers!
I'm growing a hybrid bell pepper mix, and cayenne, jalapeno, chocobelle, and lipstick peppers. I only did the first three last year so I'm excited to see how these new ones turn out!

Re: 2011 Peppers! Wha'cha growin'?!
True! Growing up in México, my mom used them to make stuffed peppers and we joked that there was always ONE in the pot that was really hot . Lucky (not!) the person who got it.pattipan wrote:Poblanos are "mildly" hot, although sometimes you get one that has an extra kick.
Re: 2011 Peppers! Wha'cha growin'?!
I should have added what I am growing. I have one of each, all store bought:
Jalapeño
Habanero
Poblano
Green Bell
Can't wait to grow from seed next year. Maybe a ghost chili!
BTW, my habanero has had a ton of flowers from the start, but NO fruit. I know there are pollinators because I saw a bumblebee and some butterflies, and the cukes next to it are producing fruit. Any ideas?

Bells & Chilis
This year I'm concentrating on a variety of Green and Colored bells. I'd like to also grow some Red Chili's picked green for Indian Curries and perhaps some Scotch Bonnets for Jamaican Jerk. Last year I grew a couple Thai Bird Chili plants in pots. I added those to Thai Fried Rice, Thai Red Curries and Omelettes. I Love Spicy Food. Hope everyone has a bountiful pepper crop this year!

Re: 2011 Peppers! Wha'cha growin'?!
Datil peppers a thin walled heirloom hot pepper. I'm betting it is one of the oldest, if not THE oldest, imported heirlooms in the US. In 1768, the Minorcans brought their beloved Datils with them.
The Minorcan Hotness scale
1.When you upper lip breaks out in a sweat.
2.When your upper lip and forehead break out is a sweat
3.Items 1 & 2 and your ears start ringing
4.Items 1,2,3 and you can't breathe
purple beauty pepper
red bell pepper that was how it was labled, you know what they look like.
