Great idea! I am planning on some New Mexico style peppers. The specific ones depends upon what transplants I can find, but most likely Big Jim's or 2-4L's When I start seedlings next year, I think the possibilities opens up a lot there. I am going to make green chile sauce out of them... mmmm mmmm good

I am also going with some traditional bell peppers, a jalapeno plant, and maybe some salad peppers...

I am tomato and pepper crazy.....I think I am in love actually. I have too many to remember off the top of my head but I will put a list up here in the next day or so because I have it all written down at home. The one specialty pepper I picked out to grow this year is one I found on ebay - White Habanero. Sounded pretty good to me since I can't ever get enough spice. Last year I went with Fatali Peppers which are supposed to be the 5th or 6th hottest in the world. But I can't wait to see what people are growing to get even more crazy ideas about planting more plants!

i'm growing carnival sweet peppers--an unnamed hot pepper from seed given to me by a mennonite farmer--and a a different, HOT pepper that we call "papa's peppers", because they come from seed given to me by my father three years ago.

Yesterday I picked up a Mild Jalepeno and a Poblano (starts). Probably going to add a couple more hot peppers as I find ones that catch my eye. Actually just starting an Anaheim from seed right now. I'll also start more from seed during the summer for fall peppers. I like the heat, but hot peppers are really abundant and cheap down here, so it makes more sense for me to just buy what little I need and grow what the family will eat (and the sweet peppers that are more expensive).

I plan on freezing peppers this year. Some of these will be in my rows at the local community garden so not all in my raised beds.

The other thing I'm trying this year is putting two of a kind in side-by-side squares. I understand peppers like to 'rub shoulders' with other pepper plants. I'm hoping this is true.

From what I understand the only peppers you want to keep separate are hot versus mild. Apparently. If they cross pollinate your sweet peppers may end up being hot peppers and vice versa.

At least that is what I hear, but I'm not sure. This is my first year growing peppers. My hots and milds are going to be kinda close, so I guess I'll find out. LOL

I'm not sure, but considering that peppers carry most of their heat in the seeds I'd imagine that it'd make an immediate difference. Hopefully someone with pepper experience will chime in.

I wasn't worried about the separation of cultivars.
Normally I plant a pepper, eggplant, Kale, cabbage, turnips, you get the idea, different crops in each block.
This year I will put two of one cultivar, like the Sweet Banana, in blocks side-by-side.

I heard, too, about hot and sweet crossing so I won't be putting any of those together. I don't know the truth of it yet.

Does anyone know about hot peppers changing the taste of nearby sweet ones?

I have read that you should seperate pepper cultivars by 30 feet at a minimum to delete the chances of cross-pollination. I have also read and learned by hand that your sweet peppers will make your hot peppers dull if planted together. I had 6 types of peppers in a self-watering earth-box last year and they all pretty much tasted the same (with sweet jalapenos to boot! argh!)

1. Antohi Romanian (heirloom)
2. Odessa Market (heirloom)
3. Ace (hybrid)

This is my first time growing them from seed, and so far they've been doing very well.

Darn! That's what I was afraid of. I can't get my peppers that far apart, but I'll try to shuffle something... Sad

I grew sweet bell peppers in the same box with an Anaheim and a hot banana last year. All varieties tasted as they ought.

same for me, all mine were as expected. i save seed year to year as well so if there is cross-pollination going on, it is not having any effect.

This is the first year for gardening for me, so excuse my ignorance, but do peppers need support like staking or cages? If so what does everyone use?

For extra support on the bigger bell varieties, just stake it to a piece of wood or bamboo or if you really want you can try a trellis. I would just tie it up to some wood or use a cage but they are pretty strong suckers. The smaller, hot varieties will not get too tall at all so they probably won't need much support. The peppers will grow little trunks over time too like a tree, so that leads me to believe they can be pretty sturdy on their own....

I couldn't make up my mind on what varieties, so I ordered Guneys 'Hot Pepper Mix' and their 'Sweet Bell mix'. I have twenty mystery seedlings that could potentially turn out to be:

Red, yellow, purple and gold bells, Jalapeno, Serrano, Hungarian Hot Wax, Anaheim, Cayenne.

I have a feeling that I'm going to wind up with way more peppers than I could ever use. Very Happy

Here in the land of fog, rain and cool temperatures,(avg mid 60's to mid 70's in high summer) the Extension Service says don't even bother to grow peppers.

Every once in a while we actually have a warm summer here. I think the last one was 2004. Sooooooooooo, I might get lucky and here is what I am trying this year.

MULATO-ANAHAEIM- HOT

EARLY JALAPENO - HOT

KUNG PAO - HOT

GYPSY - SWEET

BANANA - SWEET

CAL WONDER - SWEET BELL

PERUVIAN AJI AMARILLO - HOT

RED MUSHROOM HOT

I really thought I had 10 varieties started from seed, but this is all that is on my spread sheet. I guess I should go back to my seedling station and see what I acutally have. Seedlings, Seedlings everywhere, but well labeled.

I should send you a package of Czech Black peppers (Uprising Seed). Last year the only Tomatoes that I was able to pick red were Siltz....as you well know it was an exceptionally chilly summer BUT I got a nice harvest of black jalapeno type peppers from this plant. I'm putting in 5 of them this year. Gypsy didn't give me but one pepper out of the same garden. However I did just read that they turn red when they are fully ripe. I did not see any of those last year. Not real hot but you can tell they have jalapenos in the woodpile (so to speak).

This was August 15 and was probably the biggest pepper that day. I think I got just under a dozen from this plant. We went on vacation a couple of days later and came back to a heavily loaded, very pretty pepper plant.

Probably not the thing to say in here but in the past I have always put smaller tomato cages around my peppers just for the mechanical protection from me walking around nocking branches and peppers off the plants. I grow a bunch of kids but particularly love Trinidad Perfume a small yellow variety that sounds like a hot one but has NO heat. It is a long season 80-90 day variety.
