Growin grain in a SFG.... Empty Growin grain in a SFG....

Post  Theresa 3/20/2010, 10:20 am

I attended a conference back last fall, and one of the
classes I attended was growing grain & legumes in your backyard, presented by ISU. I think what really caught my eye about this class was they used the SFG method.

The instructor said that many gardeners overlook the fact that growing grain in a small area is possible.
Although the harvest may be small, just adding your own grains to your recipes will add nutritional value as commercial grain processing removes a fair amount of the minerals and vitamins found in the germ and bran.

Growing grain and legumes in your SFG may not be for everyone, but just for the fun of it I’m going to give it a try. They gave me sample packs of seed to get me started: Red quinoa, amaranth, flax, sorghum, barley, wheat, & oats.

And if I don’t use the grains myself, the birds will love it!

So many of my home school families like this one as a summer project. Most of them have had The Little Red Hen read to them. It puts feet to the story and intrest to whole grain bread.
