Newbie in St Louis MO

Hello everyone. I don't have much of a story other than that my best friend got me a book on small plot high yield gardening for my bday and it got me looking into SFG. I have gardened for 2 years now and this will be my third year with a vegetable garden. My garden last year was very over grown and pushed too close together so I am interested in how this will work with such small spaces. I have 11' x 14' on one side and 10' x 4' on the other side. I am planning to put all my sunloving plants in 10' area and just make maybe 3 3' x 1' boxes for them. It may be a little difficult to store a 10' long one in the garage with all the other stuff. The 10' side has full sun all day long, so tomatoes will be very happy there. We just had snow today so spring is still a little ways off but I can be patient. Hope you all have a great year!

Welcome to the forum, Jennie.

I'm about three hours south of you, between Sikeston and Poplar Bluff. It's always great to welcome another Missourian to the forum.

It sounds as though you have a good plan in mind for your space. I'm wondering why you are worried about storing a 10' box in the garage? Will you not be able to leave it outside year-round? That's what most of us do. Some put winter covers over their boxes to keep weed seeds and trash from blowing in.

Will you be building a trellis for indeterminate tomatoes or are you planning to grow bushy determinate varieties?

Keep us posted on how your garden grows, and don't be afraid to ask questions. There are lots of folks here happy to help in any way they can.

I guess since I put the fencing in the garage over the winter I figured I would do the same with the boxes. It makes more sense to just leave them out all winter and cover them. Thanks!

I, too, live in STL. I live down by 44 and 270 in Crestwood. My garden is about to suffer a real setback with this winter resurgence. I have a cover that I use, but didn't put the 2nd layer on before I left for KC this weekend. I wonder what I find Sunday evening when I come back?

What part of town are you in? Better yet.....where did you go to high school....lol. Don't answer the last one; just my attempt at local STL humor.

Show us some pics when you get the chance, or if you care to. They are truly worth 1000 words.

Good to know there are other STL gardeners on the forum! I am in St Ann near 170 and the Rock Road. I haven't planted anything yet this year, especially since I am going to try this new method, so I haven't lost anything with this new snow. I am hoping to get some boxes either made or bought this weekend. I'll post pictures when I actually have something going on.
