Hi! I was just given several bags filled with rabbit manure which I was so excited about!

But when I got them, I found that there is a LOT of hay and sawdust mixed in with it. (The bunny owner assured me that several gardeners have used this mix and no seeds have sprouted from the hay.)

I know rabbit manure is considered a cold manure, that it doesn't need to compost further to go into the garden, but what about when it's all mixed up with hay and sawdust?

I have a bed that is topped with a few inches of MM, and I also havel several containers that need to be filled to grow melons and anything else that won't fit in my raised beds. Would this bunny poop/hay/sawdust mix be okay to mix into the top of that bed? Or used in a mix to fill containers? Or - because of the sawdust and hay, do I need to add it to my compost pile???

I have no idea what to do with this stuff, which I'm sure is great but where to use it and how? Thanks for your wisdom!

Since it has uncomposted hay and sawdust in it, you probably have two good choices:

1. Use it as a mulch around plants, and let it slowly break down. Don't work it into the soil where it will begin robbing nitrogen from the soil, just use it as mulch.

2. Add it to the compost bin or tumbler, and allow it to fully compost before adding to a bed.

Add it to an 18 day hot composting pile to kill the hay seeds .
