y'know, Mick, I hadn't even thought about that...Arnica gets a bit big for an SFG, but I have some beds that get partial sun where pretty yellow flowers would be welcome. And having leaves with which to make oil would be a bonus!

The US has largely not figured out the magic of arnica yet, if you can believe that. For the US posters, it's an herb which is *fabulous* for soft-tissue injuries -- strains, sprains, bruises -- it helps a little with the pain and inflammation, but it seems to jump-start the healing process. It's one we've embraced wholeheartedly now that we're in a place where it's recognized.

Well the sun shone all day today and I got up nice and early to put some more fence up. Put me boots and dirty gear on and went on the garden to mark out the positions of the new posts. I measured the total length of the plot to make sure I was right with the position and low and behold whoever did the Land Registry drawings for this piece of land measured the plot wrong by 2 feet one way and 11 inches the other. I phoned the Solicitor who did the land swap to my deeds and he was out so I did not dare do anything till I had spoke to him. When he finally rang me back at 2.30pm and told me just to follow what I thought were the boundaries as long as the were clear to see (which they are because they are defined by fences all the way round) and it would be ok. He said that the Land Registry are not even bothered unless it is above 1 meter different. By the time he told me that it was too late to start anything. Never mind, try again tomorrow.

kimbertangleknot, No need to pay the fare to come here, Julie (my wife) loves painting fence panels. She gets a little stool and site on it all day with paint brush in hand. Luckily for her though these panels are pre-treated so won't need doing for a couple of years.

LaFee, miinva, Yes the Arnica Gel has worked well, I can only just see where the bruises were and that's only from 2 days ago.

Furbalsmom, Yes it does spruce it up, but I will be glad when all the construction bits are all done and I can get on and enjoy myself.

I managed to get 3 post and 2 fence panels in today between going to the Post Office and the Hospital (Daughters blood test). I won't bore you with another photo yet but may take one tomorrow if I get a few more done. The ground was well frozen on the top 2 inches so was hard to dig at first then the sun came out and it was like a ice skating rink.

You are certainly dedicated! Your garden has no choice but to be a huge success with that much hard work.

We're huddling under the threat of snow, and battling an evil flu bug that has taken over the whole house this week.

I guarantee I'd rather be out in my garden!

Well, nothing done today. An old back injury is starting to play up. Got a heatpad on and took some Ibuprofen tablets. Hope this helps. I will get back on the fence as soon as I can but it may be a couple of days. I think its from lifting the heavy concrete posts into the holes that's done it. Never mind, it's a bit cold out there anyway. Smile

Get Julie to put her Arnica gel on your back. It works better for me than heat pads.

I know it's counterintuitive, but ice your back, not heat (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)...it helps reduce the inflammation and it heals much faster. My chiropractor thought he was going to have to beat that into my head, but I eventually figured it out.

And arnica.

If you can get hold of it (I can't remember if it's over the counter in the UK or not) naproxen sodium will help *enormously*, although it takes a day or so to take full effect.

(I have a slight deformity in my spine that occasionally leaves me in agonising pain...and ice and naproxen sodium remain my first allies)

Are you joking, I scream if Julie puts her cold hands on my back.

I don't think I could take the Naproxen cos of the side effects etc., I have a few of them already. You can't get it over the counter here either.

It will clear up, it normally takes about 2 days from past history. I keep saying, I am not going to do anything like that again to start it off, but I always do, you know what us men are like. We mopes around like babies with Nurse Julie looking after us, and that's before there's anything wrong with us. Very Happy

I am going to try the Arnica tonight though when I get this heat pad thing off.

I suggested that my son iced a foot injury yesterday and he told me that recent thinking is that the swelling is needed as part of the repair process! So I have given up dispensing first aid advice Cool

wrapping the ice/ice pack/bag of frozen peas in a dish towel keeps the jump factor away...but you'll want to sit under a blanket, as it will make you chilled quicker than you'd think.

Well the back is not quite right but it's a lot better than it was 5 days ago. Thanks to all who asked.

I managed to get 2 more panels in today before it started raining. Mind you I was ready to give in anyway before my back started again. I will be back on again tomorrow and hopefully get another 2 or 3 done. If I can keep this up the fencing will be finished this week end. We will see. Very Happy

Thanks to everyone who is following and taking an interest in my progress. It is very much appreciated and keeps me determined to get this to completion.

Someone else who was interested in my work was the local law enforcement helicopter who was hovering over me all the time I was working. Maybe he thought I looked a bit warm and was cooling me down. Not sure if he thought I was putting the fence up or pinching it.

I bet it was tempting to wave the pilot in so he could use his chopper to lift and place the panels. (your tax dollars...err, pounds...put to good use)

Deborah... cheering for you, wanting the work done before the work of gardening should begin.

We got up early this morning and did other jobs first and then got onto the fencing and managed to do 6 panels altogether to finish off the long run. 6 more panels to go and then the levelling starts and carting away of all the rubble which is still on my other part of the garden.

Jumiclads, the fencing is looking good. It is starting to define your garden area. cheers
Glad the back is doing better. Your assistant (son I think you said) appears to be pretty busy.
Good Luck on finishing the fencing this weekend so you can level and finish carting away the rubble.

I won't bore you much more with fencing shots. I got 4 panels done today so only 2 more to go which go between the 2 posts on the right . These are both cuts so will take a bit longer so as not to leave a 6 inch gap at the end.

Each step completed, leaves that much less to be done.

Here's to finishing up the fence so you can get the ground leveled and the rubbish tossed. The on to your boxes!

What is the orientation? East west the long way or ?? I assume the fencing will not cause too much shade? Looks good. I can't wait to see if midsummer.

It does get plenty of sun but obviously some parts will be shaded sometime during the day. I will be putting a chicken pen down at the south end where it is shaded the most.

Wow, Mick, that is awesome!! I love what you have done with the place. So sorry to hear about the job. The pic with your "little" helper in it gives me a better idea of the height of the fence.

If you don't mind me making a suggestion........I work for ICI Paints or what was ICI before we were bought by Akzo Nobel a year or two ago. I am a huge fan of wood and really hate to see people cover up the beauty of the grain with paint or solid hide stains. Besides that, I am basically lazy and stingy. I hate scraping old lifting and peeling paint. I would much rather be gardening or sitting in the shade drinking Mojitos made from mint I have grown myself. So may I suggest putting just a semi-transparent stain or an oil finish on the wood. Not sure if you can get it there but we sell one in our stores that is called Australian Timber oil. It is made by Cabot. It was designed for the harsh climate of the Australian outback and can be used on most kinds of wood. We used it on some spruce that my husband used to make new doors for our garden shed. One coat is all that is recommended. It is amazing stuff and makes that cheap spruce look like some kind of tropical exotic wood. I also put it on the lattice around my compost bin. Comes in four or five different colours. It doesn't check or peel....just kind of fades and the wood begins to look a bit dry and water no longer beads up on it. When you see that happening.........just slap on another coat.

Anyway.......just a thought and a suggestion. I know that you have ICI Paint in Britain and if they don't have the Cabot product, they will have something similar.

Not much to report today. I finished the last 2 panels yesterday and spent the past 3 hours burning all the old fence panels and timber that I dug up from the garden whilst clearing it. I am going to have my tea now and then watch some tele.

Old Hippie ... I will have a look at the diy store for this oil but for now the fence is all pre-treated so it will be next year before I need to do any brushing.

My son said tonight, "I don't know about you dad but I am really pleased with what we have acheived" and I said "Yes me too, just wait till your eating the fresh melons from the greenhouse, that will really please you"
