seed garden???
Hi,
I was reading somebodies web site/ blog and they mentioned a seed garden. It sounds like a neat concept. Is it a garden where you plant plants and let them go to seed? Does it make it easier to collect the seeds because they are in one space only? I know for a square foot garden it would make it much easier to rotate the rest of the garden, if I did not have to wait for the last lettuce plant to go to seed. Thanks in advance for the help and advice.

Re: seed garden???
If I'm not mistaken, a seed garden would probably not be wise for an SFG, since we want to be careful of how many plants we allow per square.
I'd read about this somewhere too (maybe I saw it in Mother Earth News) and decided that I would do a seed garden of flowers in my front yard (non-sfg beds)... My columbine seeded itself last year (unintentionally) and so did my morning glory. I'm letting them both re-seed this year, to see what happens. The columbine was a whole two plants originally, and now I have eight that have gone to seed. I'm hoping it takes over that whole bed. The morning glory went crazy (as morning glory tends to do)... but I'm happy with where it is, so I'll let it 'do its thing' and reseed itself.
My dill reseeds too... that's in an herb bed (non-sfg) where I don't mind it spreading.
I guess that's the key - is it something you want to spread? And is it where you want it spreading?

Re: seed garden???
Hi,
The description I read did not indicate the seed garden was to allow the plants to spread on their own. As I did not really understand you could be right. I was thinking I could plant a square of each of the plants I want to go to seed and they would be easy to spot when it was time to harvest. Plus I would not have to hunt all over my garden to look for the veggies that I missed. Thanks for your help.

Re: seed garden???
For me (and I image some others who primarily start from transplants or purchased stock), "seed garden" is just the window box where I start seeds inside the house until they germinate and/or are ready to transplant outside.
Might be what the individual you saw using that term meant..... I dunno
