Aerogardening Empty Aerogardening

Post  mschaef 1/13/2016, 10:20 pm

Since most know but some might not, I am currently in an apartment which gets no direct sunlight even on the small patio. I was too excited to get out of the in laws and our own place again to consider sunlight. Anyways my sweet hubby and kids got me an areogarden for Christmas due to things not shipping right with the right seed pods I got another one for free Wink ! I'm starting this thread so those who have mention wanting one can see how it works and ask me question that I will answer to the best of my ability and knowledge. I will strive to keep it up dated with pictures of how my plants are doing throughout the year.

I started my herbs on the 16 of December. Tomatoes were started December 26. I have been harvesting the dill and both types of basil several times already. Waiting for my mint and parsley to get going before moving the lights up. The cilantro never sprouted. When I call the company they apologized and are sending me a new cilantro. Now my tomatoes are getting big quick but I need to cut the extra starts the sprouted. Just haven't yet. Here they are:

I'm so excited to have fresh herbs and soon fresh tomatoes!!! My boys, 8 and 5, love eat the herbs. My older one is eyeing to tomato plants hoping to get the first tomato.

The light for the herbs is 17 hours and the tomatoes is 16 hours. They are set to turn on around 4 and turn off in the morning cause we use the as a night light for the kids. Laughing
Here is a picture of the bottom front where you can chose the lights settings. Also you can see the water gage and on the left the light comes on when you need to add nutrients. Both of the aero gardens came with a bottle. For both its 8 ml every two weeks.

That's so cool!  I'm really glad you're keeping us posted on your progress.  Ever since you first posted that you got them for Christmas, I've been eyeballing the aerogardens for myself!  I'm really excited to see how everything comes out for you.

Me too, LS! Mschaef, are the light times pre-set based on what you are growing? Or custom?

Scorpio rising in the picture I posted above is of the base. There are set times but you can chose which one you want. They also have seed starter kits that you can use to start your own seeds in. Not sure how they works since I'm just trying out the herb and tomato kits right now.
Aerogardening Win_2013
The tomatoes are going to be 4 weeks on Saturday.

Aerogardening Win_2014
These herbs are 5 weeks tomorrow. I have a Tupperware dish full in the frig of Thai basil and Geneva basil. The dill is in a Ziploc bag. Hoping to dehydrate them when I get more.

Aerogardening Win_2015
Here you can see I had to raise the herb lights already.

Hey guys, guess what I found!  I was walking through Walmart's outside garden section last night (yes, I am garden obsessed), and happened to see a bunch of small aerogardens on clearance!  I picked one up because they were only $30, and it said they were $50.  Amazon is selling them for $66.

Aerogardening Img_2312

Aerogardening Img_2313

It came with basil, dill, and parsley.  I'm not much of a fresh herb user though, so I dug the dill seeds and the parsley seeds out of the pods and planted lettuce in them instead.

Julie, I just came back from Walmart (yes, I too was in the seed starting area, spent $50 on a seed starting thingy with a cover etc. and sunflowers and nasturtium and marigold seeds...had to walk away....). And I saw those!!!! They only had one left. I passed on it, mostly due to the damage I had already done in the area. But it was the exact one you have for $49.99! Way to go! SCORE!

Thanks guys!  I totally know what you mean about taking a lot of damage to the wallet, SR.  I just can't help myself when seeds and seed things are around.  I have a half gallon pop top canister that I store my seeds in; when I got in it today to get some lettuce seeds (and put in my flower seeds that I bought last night), I told my husband that I have a problem, a seed problem, lol, because the canister is completely full!

I friend told me just to give them a little shake each day because tomatoes are self pollinating. The female and male are in the same flower just have to knock the stuff down to the base of the flower.

Oh wow, MS!  I can't believe you have flowers already!  What variety of tomato pods are you growing?

I've been thinking about trying their mighty mini tomato pods, which I looked up and to find out what kind of tomato they really are, and supposedly they're Micro Toms.  I guess they're the world's smallest tomatoes, and when grown in a small container, they only get 4-6 inches tall.
