Good Morning Gardeners.

Today is June 6th 2010. On this day 66 years ago the battle of D-Day began. To show just how rough the war was 33 men including my dad hit the beach. My dad was the only one from his unit to survive.

And today another, much less serious, battle was joined. That of the squash bugs and our squash plants. Neem oil was used as a preventive measure and low and behold 2 squash bugs came out of hiding. Glad to get them early.

Remember our Veterans and yes our Square Foot Gardens can be considered "Victory Gardens".

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Ward, please note -that emoticon is a salute - not crushing a beer can on my forehead.

All lightness aside, Two battles were begun today. 766553 my hat is off to your father and doubly so for his fallen brothers. I can not imagine the impact on your father.

I will think of your story while I go out bug-hunting today.

Two battles were begun today. Empty D-Day

If not for those brave men and women, we may not have the freedom to grow gardens for our own use and would probably be speaking German or Japanese.

Thank you Ward for reminding us of this aspicious event. Two battles were begun today. 109486

I've walked those stony beaches a number of times, Ward, and I've always been in awe of the guys who gave their all (and then some). Those cliffs are not an easy climb on a nice day, and I shudder to think what it must have been like in the cold rain carrying a heavy pack and some guy shooting at you.

The rusting hulks of many of the craft still lie there in the sand...it's a beautiful place, but the sadness still lingers there.

The cemetery just a few kilometres away are a silent witness to the immense sacrifice...every American should stand there amongst the thousands of white crosses and think about what they mean.
