% of True SFG in your gardens??
Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
There is a great thread topic going here... https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t6293-do-you-exclusivily-sfg?highlight=exclusively+sfg
I didn't want to hijack that one by adding a poll to it. However, I would love to keep a running tally of the percentage of our gardens that ARE utilizing the SFG concepts. Remember the three fundamentals: Mel's Mix, Raised Beds, and a Grid. Please only include the gardens that are adhering to the fundamentals, not the ones we are loosely calling "SFG." (It's not such a big deal in real life, but for the sake of the poll, it kind of is.)
If you want to take your % by area (number of squares) or just the number of beds, either way is fine.
For instance, if I had a 10x20 row garden, a 4x12 and 2x8 SFG, I would say 200 sqft and 64 sqft, respectively. So, about a 1/3 of my garden space would be true SFG. Guesstimating is fine....don't go whipping out the tape measure.
Ok? Thanks a million for helping provide this information.

Re: Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
Quick question: Are you referring to just my veggie garden? There are perennial gardens built into our landscape that were here when I bought the house. You're not referring to those too are you?

Re: Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
one 4x8 and two 4x4 and one 2x5 and one 2x2 = 78 Sqft of SFG
I also have 6 5-gal buckets for tomatoes, two 18gal bins for potatoes, and 3 herb buckets.
I chose over 75%.

Re: Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
I answered 100%, but I'm in a similar situation as Blackrose. I put in the perennial beds before learning about SFG. I had done a little vegetable gardening prior, but immediately switched to all SFG. So I hope I am not cheating by answering 100%.

Re: Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
Yes, guys....just the veggie stuff. I never expected people to build multi-thousand dollar landscaped beds across the whole front of their houses and fill them with MM and grids...lol.
Lots of us have perennial gardens lining our houses I'm sure. I didn't count those in my plan, either. Thanks for asking because I see where that's confusing.

Re: Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
I voted!!! I'm in the over 75% category.
I have a few pumpkins and flowers in old tires...no MM cause I don't eat them or care if the crop fails. Pumpkins notoriously don't do well in my area, so I don't try real hard.
I also have the corn rows...again notoriously bad area here for this so I just can't stress over it.
I also have hops that I grow up and over the side of the garage...they need heights in excess of 15 feet and I just don't wanna buy that much electrical conduit...ROFL.
My tomatoes are in MM, in self watering containers hubby built for me because I was watering to erratically for them last year and didn't get any good ones.
EVERYTHING else.....120 squares worth is SFG ALL THE WAY! Grids, beds and MM.

Re: Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
I voted more than half. I have a few containers full of Miracle Grow potting soil that I got 90% off at CVS last summer. Most of my containers are full of MM, and all of my beds are (and have grids) BUT it's not "true" MM because I added a double dose of compost.

I voted over 75% because I don't have everything converted yet - and may never convert the shade flowers down the north side of the house!

Re: Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
I voted over 75%, due to some tomato pots and other pots. But really I have 150 square feet of gardens which are veggies. When I did my counting earlier I did not count the flower squares/boxes. I have a few. I have a bunch of perennials and garden beds around the house and after 10 years of slowly adding stuff it is starting to look very nice. My garden will increase in size again when the kids out grow the swing set. If I had my way there would be not irritating grass to mow.

Now that you've cleared that up. LOL! I voted for 75%. I have my peas in 12" round pots and plan to build at least one of those self watering totes for some tomatoes too. Hmmmm... or maybe 2 or 3. I'm may have to sell some tomatoes this year!

First SFG Went in Today!
We took our 23 X 20 row garden and started converting. I filled my first SFG today . We have 3 more boxes built but have to extend our garden a little first. The hubby grows lots of Roma tomatoes for sauce and stewed tomatoes - I don't think we can quite imagine them in a box 6" deep. Plus, we can only buy so much MM this year. I am lovin' the SFG concept, now I can grow one or two of something - try doing that in a row garden!

BR....I am going to have toms if it kills me....I have 14 plants scheduled for production....
Carolyn Phillips makes me feel not so bad about it... When hubby is like over my tomato plans....I show him Carolyns posts about her greenhouse!

Oops I lied. I voted 100% but then I remembered I'm doing a few tomatoes in containers this year. That's only because we're moving this summer & I'm taking the maters with me!
Re: Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
I don't blame you, I would be taking them with me as well.

Re: Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
Well grrrr I counted all my beds! rofl....
Ok, if it is just counting veggie beds I am going to count the bed I made by the old book! So I have 1-2x4, 2-4x4, and a bathtub rofl..
I am changing mine to over 75%!

Re: Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
Oops, I goofed!
I voted "I have other stuff I do, too; more than half" with 69% SFG, 31%Non-SFG, but I forgot my Arbor with 5 2X4 boxes, giving me now 76% SFG!
And some of those 24% containers have Mel's Mix, and I consider them as 1 square, but didn't for the poll. The main thing is, the system works. In fact, it works great!
Sorry I messed up the Stats

Re: Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
Less than half but not by choice and it won't stay that way. Just today my bro got my 4'x6' table top half built. The rest is in containers. After the LL(land lord) finishes his improvements this summer there will be more. Oh, yes there will be more.

I voted 100%, and right now that's what I have, but in the future I would like to make long raised bed asparagus and strawberry beds, using sheet mulching.

Yeah, I voted 100% too... then realized I have two tomatoes in pots, and five pots of herbs.

Re: Poll: What % of Your Garden is SFG Style?
I'd almost say 100% since my containers use Mel's Mix too, but I didn't count them. At any rate, I could barely keep herbs alive (although I did have some success with a container tomato plant last year) before SFG. I will forever thank the book donor I met who introduced me to the concept!

Well, darn. I wanted so badly to vote 100%, but I do have one mint plant in a pot. But it's in a pot because it's invasive and I read that you shouldn't put it in your sfg unless you want it to "take over!" So I voted 75%. But I insist that I am 100% in spirit!!!
I love, love, love my sfgs!!!
