Broccoli?
Hi,
Trying SFG broccoli again even though last year it went miserably. Possibly a very small but critical misunderstanding. Broccoli is supposed to be 18” apart, or in SFG terms, 4 in 9 squares. Does it make more sense to plant like the left (which is how I had done it last year) or the right? The one on the left ends up putting the plants 12” away from each other, the right one is more like 24”. I could even set them up so they’re sort of off center of the corner squares, making each plant 9” away from the edge, and 18” away from each other. (Frankly, that sounds even better.)
Thoughts?

Re: Broccoli?
MaBehr, Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage can be planted one per square if using at least 6" of Mel's Mix. Have you had a change to read one of the editions of ALL NEW Square Foot Gardening?

Mabehr, one of the good things about using rich soil, such as Mel's Mix, is that we can grow plants much more intensively than can be done in average garden soil. As Sanderson said, plant the brassicas at the distance of one per square foot, which will give them plenty of room and plenty of soil nutrients. Is your soil compost-rich to provide the soil nutrients?
