I've got peas Empty I've got peas

Post  walshevak 4/17/2012, 1:41 pm

As I was watering this morning I discovered I've got peas on the chairtop vines. One was even big enough to eat. Yum! Should have enough to go into a salad or stirfry by the end of the week. Also picked some of the lettuce in that bed and added to the wintersown lettuce (which is about to bolt) and to the wintergrown spinach (also ready to be replaced). Having a nice salad and a left over chicken leg for lunch.

I had my first tiny little English peas yesterday! Not enough to do anything with, only three pods worth, but enough for a taste. Oh. My. Goodness. Sweeter than candy!

I'm a newbie and in zone 7A. I'm so excited that you have peas! I have incredibly gorgeous and well growing pea plants (which is good because the spinach and lettuce aren't doing so well) but it's not flowering yet, and no peas. But, if they are coming in in zone 8 we shouldn't be too far behind! Enjoy the harvest!

Peas have been poking their heads up for a while now. I will begin to fertilize soon. Radishes have finally begun to push out of the mix. Package said 28 days it has been almost 2 months. I guess they did not read the package. Have already planted my second round.

Cucumbers (the originals ) are doing better. Pulled them out of the ground and REMOVED the entire biodegradable pot and replanted. Instructions were peel off the bottom and put it in the hole. My seed plants are a lot farther along. Will move them soon. They are about 4 inches tall now.

Bell Pepper plants are beginning to flower. The bush beans are growing like crazy. Will thin them next week. Carrots are coming along just fine. I have two pumpkin plants ( orange ) that are about 4 to 5 inches tall now and will also replant them next week. I am about to plant my white pumpkins as well. Both should be ready for fall holiday season. My watermelons are pushing up and looking fine as well.

The six different tomato plants all have small tomatos on them. They all seemed to start bearing within a week of each other. My only no show at this time are my green onions. Still waiting. The bulb onions are not due yet.

So far so good for my first year. It has been a real learning experience. Mel's book is never far away.

Great job.

I've got peas Empty Peas in Georgia

Post  kgooding 5/20/2012, 12:48 am

I've got peas now too! I'm so excited! It's my first real success in the SFG. I harvested a few spinach leaves, but 2 squares of spinach haven't been enough to make even a side salad for both my husband and me for a meal, and my lettuce didn't do well. My broccoli is huge with gigantic leaves, but I see no heads forming, and my cauliflower is microscopic, I don't think I started it indoors early enough! But, I harvested about 10 peas tonight for dinner, and I totally steamed then up right away. They were fantastic, and the vines are flowering like mad so maybe later this week we'll have more.

Give your broccoli more time although I used a 1/2 strength dose of a bloom booster to bring on my heads on my gigantic broccoli. Also cut some of those gigantic leaves off and cook like collards or cabbage. They make great wraps like used in stuffed cabbage leaves. When did you plant it outside?

Interesting idea about the bloom booster, but I guess since it's the flower we eat it works great! Mine ended up going in a little late for my region, on 4/1 after my initial seed starts disappeared. Not really sure where they went, but at least the local garden center had more! The leaves are a huge and something has been chewing on them, I haven't seen any bugs, but the holes are there to prove it, insecticidal soap has been helping. I'm sure one of these days I'll be out there checking things out and be excited to see broccoli growing.
