Another seed catalogue arrived today. This one is from Stokes Seeds. Years ago Mrs TD worked for this company in St.Catharines, Ontario about 10 miles from Niagara Falls.

Re: 1st Seed Catalog Arrived :)
I found a local "Seed library" for backyard and community gardens which is run by a group called Just Food. It looks like gardeners can "borrow" free seeds from the library and then "return" them at the end of the year to ensure others can practice as well. The seed library operates out of a nearby, local branch of my Ottawa City Library. Available seeds include Cilantro Santo, Red Deer Tongue Lettuce, Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce, French Breakfast Radish, Orca Beans, Provider Beans, Mammoth Sunflower, Bloomsdale Spinach, Cascadia Pea, Cherry Belle Radish, Dill Dukat, Butternut Waltham Squash, Dwarf Champion Tomato, Pink Boar Tomato, Mini Rose Tomato. The Just Food group is also looking for volunteers to help manage the seed libraries. I need to find out more about this and when seeds will be made available.

Re: 1st Seed Catalog Arrived :)
I tried to put a 2018 seed catalog on the end table next to my reclining chair. It was so stacked with previous catalogs that it slid off. So I had to look thru 3 years of catalogs so I could keep the most recent one from each of the various seed companies that have sent me catalogs. Some of these catalogs are 2017 and some are 2018,

That is weird, it is not upside down on this thread when I look at it. I did accidentally take the picture with my I-phone upside down. But then I emailed it to myself and when I saved it, I rotated it so it would be right side up. And for me when I look at the picture, it is right side up.Scorpio Rising wrote:Great pic! Not upside down for me. SR, what device are you using to view the photo? Is it an iPad or iPhone?yolos wrote:That is weird, it is not upside down on this thread when I look at it. iPad...it does do some strange things. Also with the posting of pics, it is a difficult task. All I got though!trolleydriver wrote:Not upside down for me. Re: 1st Seed Catalog Arrived :)
We have been receiving new seed catalogs at least one a day for the past week and a half. We are getting catalogs from companies we have never heard of, and not sure where they got our name & address. I am seeing more and more catalogs proudly advertising on their front cover that they have only Non-GMO seeds, too.

Re: 1st Seed Catalog Arrived :)
That non-GMO is such a hype. But, on the other hand, if they didn't post that, some folks in the dark wouldn't buy them.
Re: 1st Seed Catalog Arrived :)
Since I only buy organic seeds, I don't get any GMO junk. It has worked for the past 50+ years...

Re: 1st Seed Catalog Arrived :)
I have gotten 3; one from Pinetree, which I do order from. 2 others that I have never heard from. It’s November (OK, December, lol) but really? Give us the holidays?
I guess I just want them to give us a break! My dream state for the next year starts in January! Not when I am trying to do Christmas

Re: 1st Seed Catalog Arrived :)
I guess I will be the garden catalog grinch, in that I do all my looking at and for seeds online even though there are 3 seed companies in my immediate area. I actually go to the stores and pick out my seeds in Feb. and Mar. I just don't want the catalog because I am a hoarder of the written word even though I am going through catalogs online at the USDA Library as I research the history and origin of tomato names. I know I would have stacks and stacks of catalogs somewhere here. The saving grace is I shred newspapers as bedding for my worm bins. Not more green, just don't want to be an episode on some reality tv program.
I have already ordered and received tomato seeds for next year from Rutgers University, two varieties, Rutgers 250 and a Campbell's variety strain developed years ago when New Jersey was one of the major growers of tomatoes in the US. I am wondering if anyone has dealt with Truelove Seeds as I was thinking of trying some of their offerings. They do have some rather unique offerings and then they reference the farm the seeds came from. Most farms are mid-atlantic, northeast. So the seeds should be better acclimated to my regional area rather than not even knowing where the seeds originated. There does seem to be more smaller seed companies every year. I am going to get very serious about seed saving this year, isolating blossoms on solanaceous plants and creating a good space to save seeds. I was thinking a dorm size refrigerator but not plugged in and kept in the garage which I hope to pick up for free from craigslist or freecycle.

I am also a written material hoarder! I mainly order from Baker Creek but I have ended up on some other mailing lists. As the new ones come in, I am tossing the 2017 catalogs.
