Re: What Have You Picked From Your Garden Today
That is sad to hear, SR! I have been keeping mine surrounded with diatomaceous earth hoping to keep the SVB at bay for a while. They are a bed that has never had squash before, so that might help.

Re: What Have You Picked From Your Garden Today
Makes me sad, too, OG. How big is the diatomaceous earth area around the plant stem?
I have really tried everything with no success….that Early and prolific yellow squash seems to be pretty immune! Yay! Crazy production! Love it…

Re: What Have You Picked From Your Garden Today
I throw the DE up on the base of the squash plant, and on the soil about 5" or 6" around the base of the plant. The theory is that if the SVB larva emerges and crawls across the soil on top of the DE it will kill the larva before it reaches the plant, but if it reaches the plant it will encounter more of the DE.
I went out and took a couple pictures of the Zucchinis with the DE on them -- it was getting a little dark out, but the pictures show the DE pretty well. I just noticed I need to refresh it on the plants....

I am going to try that next year. It doesn’t bother the pollinators because of the placement? Can you get that DE anywhere, or do you order it?

No, it doesn't bother the pollinators since it isn't near the blooms. It only affects crawling insects (I also use it to control sowbugs and slugs).
You can get it at most garden centers. I buy it in the 4# bag at Lowe's:

OG, you should post the photos and narrative showing how to judiciously use diatomaceous earth (DE).

As I glanced out my office bedroom window this morning, I spotted a large zucchini. It turned out to be 1.5 lbs. and had successfully hidden itself from me.

Rainbow chard. Had some of the chard and fingerling sweet potatoes for dinner.

Sweet potato. 12 lbs. At this point I'm not sure how I'll cut it up, but leaning towards chainsaw.

When you cook the kohlrobi, let us know what you think of it.
Today's Pick
Bibb Lettuce, Beet leaves, Sorrel and Kale - already have the carrots in the fridge - tomatos are just now budding. Soon will be harvesting the Broccoli and Cauliflower!

Almost never cook it. Kohlrabi, like revenge, is a dish best served cold. I sliced it up this morning partly. To me it seemed oddly salty, but my spouse thought it tasted sweet. She also thinks that Brussels sprouts taste sweet, so it might just be a personal thing.sanderson wrote:When you cook the kohlrobi, let us know what you think of it.
I do sometimes save the leaves for use in stir fry.
I've been raising the purple variety for the novelty, but I'm wondering if the plain green would grow faster and be less fibrous. They still are somewhat novel, rarely appearing at our local produce store.

Cherokee tomato. Picked a little early before the critters notice it.
