Is that from one of the seeds I sent you? NO FAIR! I got nothing but leaves. WAAAAA!!!sanderson wrote:Mellen wrote:It's not going around us. Whoo hoo!!!
During a break in the rain, I harvested this.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
Oh my goodness. I don't know if I could bear to eat it. It's just too beautiful. You should just frame it.

Munch, munch, almost gone. What a mild taste compared to white cauliflower from the store. I will increase the planting next winter. Eliminate Russian Kale and plant this. I have plenty of curly kale. Eliminate green Swiss chard and grow only Bright lights.
So far 1.1" of rain in the gauge with more expected Tuesday.

Some of the coastal Redwoods and Giant Sequoias are 2,000 years old.
Today, we ended with 1.8"

:(Pretty sure me and my family drove thru one of them. Sad. But not the best arborist practices.

I was raised up in the Sequoias. They were saying our trees were 2,000 years old when I was a child. They must be at least 2050 by now. (I just don't understand why some people call me a smart-aleck!)sanderson wrote: Some of the coastal Redwoods and Giant Sequoias are 2,000 years old.

We ended with bupkas. It was supposed to start raining here again at 7 pm, but I haven't seen anything yet.

When you're Methuselah, what's 50 years plus or minus!
I think it is amazing how they have survived forest fires for so many years. It wasn't until Smokey the Bear prevented forest fires that the fires became so hot they were hurtful.

Re: California - What are you doing this month?
We're on a ridge, so we never have to worry about actual flooding, but we aren't the highest property here, and our land slopes a little, so "a river runs through it" when we get this much rain. Unfortunately, my "Salad Bar" is right in the path of the water flow, so I won't be able to get to my garden until at least 2 days after the rain stops. The greenhouse is in the same path, so I won't be going in there for a while, either. We also had some big branches fall in the high winds, but no damage done, so we'll just chop them up for kindling.Kelejan wrote:Just saw on TV pictures of the rain and flooding in California. Cal is a large area; is the rain in Northern California? It looks terrible. I hope all is well with our gardeners.
I keep meaning to get myself a large map of Canada and the United States and stick pins in it to show where our members are living.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
I hear ya. I had water come in through my Bilko doors in the basement in the middle of the night 2 nights ago....
Torrential downpour that nothing or nobody can keep up with.....
I have damp stupid cardboard to get rid of. And it is freezing.

I'm finally getting a cucumber in the house. Fingers crossed that it survives.

Oops, I didn't think of that. Is it too late?sanderson wrote:Do you have male flowers so you can pollinate it?

Yup and I hand pollinated last night. Now we just wait and see I guess. Thanks for the heads-up, Sanderson.sanderson wrote:Possibly Any males blooming?
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
January 18 and still on garden vacation. Cut some parsley and cilantro for drying, Russian kale because it was over-grown, and mixed lettuce for a salad tonight. Oh, and fed the worm tubes. We should be having rain off and on for a week. They only thing started for this summer are sweet potato slips as they take a while to sprout and get roots. I'll plan on starting the seedlings for everything else around Valentine's Day.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
What am I doing?
Listening to the rain.
Looking out the window at the rain.
Checking the weather report to see when the rain will stop (4 more days ).
Wondering how much longer I can put up with wet cats and stir-crazy dry ones.

For those who receive a version of the Fresno Bee newspaper: "Fluctuating temperatures may have confused plants" by Elinor Teague, MG.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
My dandelions aren't the least bit confused. Hot, cold, wet, dry...they don't care. Talk about a crop! I can't keep up with them! I don't want to use Roundup back there, but.....

Re: California - What are you doing this month?
We had that problem in Oregon. Got a neat tool that you step on and it pulls them out by the roots. Then I composted the plants. That probably spread the seeds, but if they sprout in a garden bed, it's easy to pull them out when they're little.Mellen wrote:My dandelions aren't the least bit confused. Here, in our hot, dry summers, weed control is easy. We just don't water where we don't want them and they die of neglect.
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
Mellen, you know you can make jelly & wine from the flowers, right?
Re: California - What are you doing this month?
AM.....I don't want to EAT them (or drink them) I want them to DIE!AtlantaMarie wrote:Mellen, you know you can make jelly & wine from the flowers, right?
Actually, I have heard of dandelion wine, but not jelly. I'm still not sure I want to go there.

I've heard that the jelly tastes quite a bit like honey. "And it's really pretty!" ???
