Disease?

I would appreciate any feedback. I am concerned by the condition of several leaves. The temps have been scorching but that's Fresno. I know the squashes have powdery mildew and every day in this blistering heat, the leaves wilt but most bounce back by morning. The cucumbers are slowly producing. They have leaf miners but I'm not concerned with them. The ants are everywhere collecting pollen. The beans survived spider mites and now the leaves look like this. Any comments appreciated. Thanks

the leaves on my bean plant start looking like that too and I just remove them. The plant will make more leaves. The squash / cukes look like they have a nutrient deficiency. Google chlorosis...

I would remove the bad leaves & spray the rest with Neem oil. If it is a fungus problem that will help clear it up.

I Googled chlorosis study

and it seems that different nutrients could be low. But how can that be? Shocked

I use homemade compost. . . and MM! Oh, wait, I suppose after a few months, I should top dress with more compost and water it in well?? silly me

The MM for the poor squash, cucumbers, cantaloupes, and beans had shrunk to 4". I'm tempted to add a low dose of fertilizer but I will hold off for a couple of days and see if the top dressing is taking affect.

TC, I'll be hitting different plants with either Neem (pests) or milk (PM) or baby powder (ants).

I occasionally use fertilizer when something needs a quick fix. So go for it if you think you need it. Especially a long season crop like tomatoes and a high nitrogen crop like corn. Compost is good stuff but sometimes needs a little help. I believe it is slow acting and has to be broken down by microbes before it is accessible to the plants. A liquid fertilizer will be a quick jolt to get them started recovering.

I top dress to the top of the box with compost about the middle of the growing season. I too fertilize if the plants are showing they need it.

Mine are doing the same thing... think white fly! I noticed the little things fluttering around when I watered and picked. You've got to jump on them! If you see some tiny, innocent little things fluttering around when you brush the leaves...BINGO!!! Take your weapon of choice and nuke them before they zap the strength from your plants; feeding them will only be encouraging them to set up camp and start up the Barry White music, if you know what I mean Wink

YS, I've had problems with white flies even before I started gardening last year. They decimated my gardenias to the point I had no qualms about removing them. Talk about serendipity, those empty spaces were filled with SFG boxes! I don't see them around the veggies in the photos, though.

My tomatoes leaves are dying from the bottom up but the toms are doing fine. Is that normal?

Just a thought about the bottom leaves looking bad. There were pictures I saw from Cornell from lawn mower exhaust damage with Bronze colored looking leaves. Exactly what I found on the bottom of my trellised beans for example. Here I was thinking bugs or disease or nutrition defic. All the while it was DH and his mower.

interesting. My bean leaves on the bottom looked like that and I mowed by the beans only once so far this season. I just remove them and everything looks much better. It also gives clearer access when watering.

Yes and better air flow. Something else to consider is removing all discolored leaves as I found cocoon type stuff on old leaves left on the soil and I suspect it wasn't a good insect either. I do a daily clean up all old or bad looking leaves. Surprising amount of trash under there!

Rather than starting a new thread I thought I would just continue Sanderson's thread from last year. I hope that is OK.

I have a problem with a sweet basil plant in one of my SFG boxes. Some of the basil leaves have brown patches on them as shown in the photos. Any ideas as to what it could be and what I should do will be appreciated.

Looks to me like a fungal disease. Clip off the effected leaves, taking care to wipe the clippers off with a dilute bleach solutions between clippings and after you've finished. Avoid top watering, and it's better to water real early in the AM, so any wet leaves get a chance to dry. Watering late into the evening increases the chances for more fungus to form. I've had success with plain ole milk sprayed on leaves for powdery mildew and rust outbreaks, but this looks like Peronospora belbahrii: heres a link that may helpHERE

I've noticed in the past that my basil will start turning black like that if the temp falls below 50 degrees. In the fall I turn a bucket over on top of mine during nights that are under 50 degrees, then dig them up and bring them in once the low temps look to be consistent. Have you had any cold weather like that recently?

CC ... yes we have had some cool/cold weather. A couple of days ago we hit an overnight low of about 5 Celsius (about 41 F). Tonight's low is expected to be 7 Celsius (45 F). I recall now that I planted my basil too early compared to what was called for on the planting charts. I was supposed to wait a couple of weeks. I guess I may lose this one (lesson learned).

I took off the damaged leaves from the basil plant. There's not much left except some small leaves and the stems. I've covered it up for the night to protect it from the projected cold night. Keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

At least you can say you tried. It will be a good experiment. My guess is that the little leaves will become big leaves.
