AtlantaMarie, just think of all the money you saved by not having the seeds shipped to you!  (I won't own up to how much I spent at the Seed Bank, Baker Creek's outlet in Santa Rosa, CA.  But it will provide seeds for three families' gardens.)  Nonna

It won't make a sale at my house either.  BUt definitely makes me curious.
Some day I need to learn to graft, just to try this out.

The dilemma that I have is a saved a bunch of seeds and then I get these catalogs and start picking things out that I would like to have and if I keep buying more and saving I am going to end up with a TON of seeds and varieties.

Maybe I should start with a 2015 garden plan on paper then see what I would like to plant from seeds I have and buy the rest.

But those new catalogs are hard to put down...........

LOL!  Right!  Right!  Too bad HE didn't see it that way.  Shocked

And I KNOW I've got plenty of seeds.  But I tell myself that I'm helping to save various things from being taken over by Monsanto, etc.  And I'd like to be able to plant different things in different years, not just the same-old, same-old.

Just got SE Seed Exchange the other day.  Mike just laughed at me when he handed it over because I got so excited.

Turan - I think Plantoid did those last year.  If I'm remembering correctly, he had really good success!

Floyd - I agree and that's what I'm going to do too.  But that doesn't mean I still don't want to get more seeds to "keep my options open."

New Seed Catalog !! - Page 2 Empty Re: New Seed Catalog !!

Post  Turan 12/20/2014, 1:13 pm

Floyd and AMarie, when I find myself with build up of seed that I am dubious of using before it expires I sort it into edible greens/sprouts and others.  I mix the edible ones and seed a few squares with a 'micro greens' or mixed salad cutting mix.   For example I have a 2.5'X1' planter on my windowsill right now.  In it is growing a thick mix of 3 types of lettuce, 3 types of brussel sprouts, 2 types of chard, radishes, cilantro, 2 types of beets.  I thin with scissors and hope to end up with some actual lettuce heads but mean while it is tasty.  That is a thick sheaf of empty packets used up.  I could of added in corn, cucumber and other squash, okra (that one is new to me) peas and some beans (not kidney beans though).
Here is a wiki that gives some info on edibles http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Growing_Edible_Sprouts/Seeds

Non edible seedlings I toss out over some corner to be sorted out by nature.  Including all treated seed in this. The common nonedibles in our garden that I can think of right now are tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, tomatillos (everything of the solanacae family) and anything  I am unsure of.

I figure it is better to get something from the seed packet remnants before the seed expires.  And this opens my way to trying out more.

Never heard of them....   I looked at their website.  It's interesting that there were NO reviews on any of the (many) items I looked at.

New website maybe?

They say they have been in business for 145 years so I find it odd that, so far, no one has heard of them.  Hey Yolo was this catalog addressed to you or resident?

I got my first Shumway's catalog about 3 years ago. I also had not requested it, but I loved the catalog. A friend of mine buys from them and she has always loved the quality of the seeds she has received. That is the extent of my Shumway's knowledge!

That is good to know that their seeds are good.  I went on their website and it looked a little familiar so checked other seed companies web sites and it is very similar to Jung seeds.  I wonder if they are connected or just a coincidence...........

You are right, CampRN, I misspoke.  Should have said non-hybrid (F1) varieties.  Been doing more seed saving, and hybrids don't lend themselves to seed saving.  Nonna

Thanks for the link camprn....I was correct then that they are similar to Jung seeds as they are affiliated according to the website you posted.  I have never seen country fair cucumbers anywhere but Jung seeds so when I checked out Jung seeds web site it has the same rating system and format as RH Shumwaays.

I've received the Shumway's catalog too - but also other catalogs came in that I've never ordered from, etc.etc.--  like Burpee's.  (Because Burpee seeds are in the local stores, I'll buy their seed packs in the store.)

My guess is that IF you buy from one seed co, it will share/sell the purchaser's name to other seed cos.  For me that's OK because I enjoy seeing what other cos have for sale.

I just got Jung and Johnny's catalogs yesterday.  I found it interesting that Shumway and Jung seeds are connected and was looking at Vermont Bean website and there site looks like the other two.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

I just got my Territorial Seed catalog and since I'm planning on not having the hassle of my grow room this year (due to medical contraints), I'm choosing which plants to have shipped.  They have a good assortment.  I used their starts the first year I gardened because I was too late to start my own and I was very pleased with them.  They were healthy and grew to great harvests.  There's a much better variety from which to choose than going to the big box stores in the spring and you can choose when you want them shipped.  I like mine to come a bit earlier so I can tend them myself the 2-3 weeks before transplanting outdoors.

I got the Shumway catalog and won't be using them.  And I nearly fainted from the price of Burpee seed this year.
This year its only from Territorial Seed, Johnny Selected Seeds and Pinetree Garden.  I know they'll honor my choices and have healthy seeds/plants.

Happy New Years gardeners and enjoy the coming spring.

Floyd......I'm getting Spacemaster and Homemade Pickles from Pinetree this year since I want to grow smaller vines in containers and they have smaller seed portions for less money and I don't need many for a few containers.
