Buy Compost on-line
Hi,
I wanted to buy Mel's Mix at home depot, but they are still charging $10.00 shipping for an and 8 dollar bag.
I can easily find vermiculite and Peat moss. Our local home depot only has composted manure.
I have spend hours searching amazon, home depot, lowes, etc for 5 different composts to mix.
When shopping online, you cant see the bag labels, so cant tell if they are 100% or have added peat.
Can anyone post a series of links to 5 different quality composts that I can easily find online and have shipped.
Thanks,

Hi Tom, to the SFG Forum. Making your own Mel's mix will result in a healthier garden. Do you have transportation? I found some folks in your area that have manures and compost for sale, but no shipping.

Re: Buy Compost on-line
This time of year it is hard to find bagged compost. Home Depot will eventually carry cow manure, chicken manure and mushroom compost. When the weather moderates a little, the stores will start to carry it. At least in my area that is what happens.
Another place to find compost is old time feed and seed stores. I get cotton compost from the feed store.
Look in the yellow pages (yes we still get the yellow pages) or online for local nurseries or feed and seed stores. My nursery carries bagged earth worm castings, chicken manure compost, forest products compost, cow manure compost, Call around and ask locally if they carry it or if they will be getting it in when the weather moderates.

Re: Buy Compost on-line
Tom, do you have space for your own compost pile. You are in horse and cattle country and should be able to get plenty for starting your own compost but ask a lot of questions about herbicides in the pastures and feed. My daughter lives in the Purcellville area and got hold of some Killer Compost that way. She has a row garden and had to scrape off the top layer of soil after spreading. Fortunately she only half heartedly dug it in so it was only near the top.
Wegmans in Leesburg had Quoddy Blend (seafood compost) at one time. Did you try Southern States in Purcellville? Also check out the feed supplies in Charlestown.
Black Kow products are available in your area. Lowes and Southern States. I highly recommend them.

You can always order it online from Uline.com. I got half of mine delivered from them before I was able to drive to the nearest home improvement center to get the rest.

Re: Buy Compost on-line
I've used it, and it's the same stuff. When I bought several bags, it priced out the same as if I made the 80 mile round trip to buy it locally.
Please note that U-line's grading system is different.
