Rabbit Manure Empty Rabbit Manure

Post  babymango 9/23/2013, 8:49 pm

I found a nice garden center that actually sells something other than shrimp compost for my MM!  I got excited and grabbed a bag of each (cow, sheep, seaweed, hen, rabbit).  When I unloaded the car, I realized the rabbit manure isn't composted.  Can I still use it this fall when I make my new boxes?  Nothing will be growing there until April, in case that makes a difference.

Yes.  Rabbit manure can go directly into your bed even with plants in it, as long as it is not touching the plants.  That is if the rabbit manure were just the poo, without any pee.  Did that gross you out or what?

Trish the rabbit muck will have pee on it as rabbits tend to use a " midden heap "  for their toilet needs .
However it is OK to use it straight away as the urine is not something that tends to burn the plants

I found it in a large garden center in Montreal.  $5 for 30 liters (sorry, no idea what that would be in non-metric units...)

That would equate to about 8 gallons or just a tad over 1 cubic foot.

Thanks bnoles, I have a hard time with volume conversion and I'm struggling a little with getting the correct proportions for the MM!  Knowing that 30L is about a cubic foot makes it a lot easier!   Very Happy

Perhaps think of a small bucket being the single measure of volume .
The MM is all made to a set volume formula  of thirds .

For instance five buckets of fluffed peat ( that's one third ) , five bucket of vermiculite ( that's another third )  and five buckets ,  each full of a different manure ( that's the last third )

Score!

I just found a local source on Craig's List willing to give away bunny manure!

My question: How much should I get? Ii plan to use it in my compost operation for now, but am still searching for another type or two of manure to add.

I agree, get as much as you can use plus store away for the future.   If you save big yellow kitty litter containers or can get some free, I like the snap lids on them.  Great for storing finished compost too.

Well, there are only so many 5-gallon pails I can fit into the trunk of my Audi.... And my back will only permit so much shoveling.

Then that is how much you should get. Congrats on finding bunny poo.

Camp,

I'm waiting to hear back from the bunny poo lady. From her voice mail greeting, she also raises chickens and dachshunds. Perhaps I can also snag some chicken manure....

I'm rich!

I just snagged 4-5 cubic feet of that rabbit manure (there were some alfalfa pellets in it)
--and she offered sheep, chicken, and/or two-year-old horse manure in the future!

Although her place is a total dump, it's only 10 miles from home. Also, she said that her operation is certified organic. I must say that her rabbits and chickens look VERY healthy. I've never seen such huge rabbits (or are they hares?).

So far, so good with the back. I've been going to the gym, and my D.O. prescribed physical therapy.

Also, I took a strong neighbor along, around my age, and she helped just a bit. I stopped every few minutes to stretch.

Depending upon weather, I plan to go back and get the other manures soon. After I purchase more 5-gallon pails.

Tricia,

Now that I have 112 SF of space (and plan to add another bed or two), I have no choice but to hunt local (hopefully free) manures. I have plenty of leaves and can produce or obtain kitchen and garden waste, coffee grounds and filters, etc., as well as cardboard, sawdust, and shredded paper. Then, there's the seaweed I collected last fall, along with pine needle and oak leaf mold. And fish compost! Not to mention cat hair, dryer lint, etc.

Next on the agenda is to check with the closest local brewery (3/4 mile) to inquire about spent hops.
