Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
All this is great info. Thanks, folks!
Comfrey is supposed to grow wild here in New England on Cape Cod. I've wanted to grow it for years but haven't been able to figure out which plant it is out there. It's now time to get serious. I sent out an email to all my pals, complete with photos, for everyone to be on the look out for it. I'm getting emails back saying that if I find it first, they want some, too, thinking the flowers may attract hummingbirds. I don't plan on letting it flower. It's for my compost pile and any gardening boo-boos on my skin.
Thanks again!

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I bought some Comfrey plants this yr,3 of the 'blocking 14' and 3 of the 'true Comfrey' that is not a hybrid. Supposedly the 'blocking' will not put on seeds. Supposedly, if you have a plant that needs a little boost, you can take a leaf off the Comfrey plant, and just lay it under the plant, and it will just melt away and give nutrients to the plant. I just got them about 3 wks ago but they are growing well. Cannot wait to see if all the claims for this plant are true!

I'm having the smaller of the carrots today as a snack and saving the rest for Sunday dinner.
I picked these and what I think is my last onion on Oct. 17, yesterday.

Oh, beautiful, Quiltbea. Congrats on a good job. BTW, I can no longer enjoy grocery store carrots. Each year for the past three years, I've doubled the beds for carrots. Nonna

comfrey
Capecoddess, thanks for the ideas about comfrey. I've grown it for several years (originally planted for the medicinal qualities), but had no idea what a great fertilizer it is. Will be more careful where I place the cut leaves to optimize compost. Nonna

Nonna, once I find one I thought I'd plant it out by the compost piles. That way I can chop it 5 times a year and lay it on right there.
I'm also looking forward to trying it on a muscle tear I have in my hip (for years) and my mother wants to try it on her arthritic knees. Have you used it for anything like that?

I've found that root crops generally do a bit better with some bone meal added.
If I can get a carrot like this sweet organic one I got from the Stop & Shop, I'll use bonemeal! Anyone know what kind grows this big?

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Not sure what type of carrot grows that long, Imperator, Danvers? Bet Josh would know. Didn't he host a competition on who could grow the longest carrot?
and, CapeCoddess, I've only used comfrey for tea (don't particularly like it), and used the flowers in bouquets for their unusual look. I do know, once you plant them and they establish, they'll be there almost forever. Tough suckers. By using their leaves for compost, I'll stop begrudging them their place in the garden.

I see carrots that length (and longer!) at the local supermarkets. I could inquire....
Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Last weekend it was a big crock pot of lentil stew filled with chard and onions and garlic from the garden. Fed us for lunches all week.
Right now the last of the counter ripened tomatoes has been baked down with herbs and garlic and onions for spaghetti sauce. I also baked a spaghetti squash to eat with it.

Triciasgarden wrote:I did plant peas, three different lettuces, spinach, and carrots. The ferrel cats dug up most of the seeds and plants and left their droppings. I trapped nine in my garden months ago and animal control took them. There may be just one or two that get in my garden now, I think, but they just destroy it. I am now thinking of an electric fence but not sure how to do it. I've tried everything else. So that was another frustration in having a fall garden. It was like the last straw. I'm gonna take the rest of Fall and Winter off and plan on a better next year.
Triciasgarden~ I had the same issue the day after I put my raised bed in. I was so mad! I had some old wire shelves in the garage so I built 3 ft walls all around the bed. Looks a little silly, but it works. You can build any shape or size you want with these things. Don't let the furry ones get in your planting way.
Here's a link so you know what I'm talking about....

I dug up the last of the carrots and potatoes yesterday so we will be having a roasted melange of three sorts of carrots, four sorts of potatoes, and maybe a few sunchokes too

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I picked these yesterday to use as my 'popcorn & Goobers' during movie night at my sweeties. Fresh and delicious, and kept me out of the chip bag (mostly):
Still more beans on the vines as well as many green toms that I really don't think will ripen. They haven't even blushed yet.
Tonite we are having veggie chili made with TVP, fresh tomatoes, scallion tops, bell & jalapeno peppers, and adding chopped beet greens to it.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I harvested nearly all of the leaves in my fall garden yesterday in preparation for snow! I still covered it and pulled the plastic cover on my dome, but think our season might be over. I've been reading the "cold frame" thread...maybe next year.
Here's my harvest! It was my first fall garden and I loved having the fresh greens!
Leaf lettuce & Arugula, Kale, and Spinach

Yes, we sure did. And they were yummy! We've gone thru 2 more batches of beans since then, with more to come. They seem to get sweeter and fresher tasting with the cold. The snow peas aren't doing very well though. I won't do those again. But the sugar snap peas are going like gang busters, altho not many make it to the house I'm afraid.
I'm so glad Hurricane Sandy is not coming this far north so I can keep the garden going for a while longer, but sorry for those in NY & NJ. It sounds like 3 storms will merge when it gets here. Bummer!
