Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
The canning has begun! Actually a little bit, anyway.
I canned 17 quarts of Pickled Peaches yesterday, and I expect to have about 16 pints of Bread & Butter Pickles by this evening.
The cukes are from my garden , but had to purchase the peppers and onions to complete the B & B Pickles.
I went to the Farmers' Market yesterday and found the peaches. They look so pretty in the jars. I love Pickled Peaches.
Roma Tomatoes are finally starting to ripen. Can't wait to taste my first jar of fresh Spaghetti Sauce.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Today we had our first green and yellow beans for dinner from the garden with some garlic butter on top....
our second tomato sliced with cottage cheese....this time i let it sit for a bit and waited until it was really red...it was sooo yummy!
we had boiled potatoes that we harvested yesterday.... with our onions that we harvested a while back fried up with steak and mushrooms that we made into a gravy and poured it over the top of potatoes....
for dessert we have fresh picked black berries from our yard with some left over strawberries with some sugar sprinkled on top.....
we are going to blanch and freeze this batch of peas we picked today....i can not believe how well the peas have done....they just keep giving the plant looks awful....but look what it gave me today
hugs

Pulled a Purple Cosmic Carrot and an Amarillo Carrot to split with the wife. THey're still small but very tasty. Last time we agreed purple cosmic tasted much better but this time the amarillo was the winner.

Grilled Zucchini boats were on the menu made with fresh baby spinach leaves, homegrown garlic and basil. I was surprised that it was such a big dinner hit and there were not any leftovers. I have one veggie hater in my house that seems to like vegetables all of a sudden (they had seconds).

It's amazing the difference in taste for home grown veggies as opposed to store bought. Hope your veggie hater continues to suprise you.

Truly amazing! I picked my watermelons yesterday - too early, as I found out when I cut it open this morning (it was justs starting to turn pink in spots. BUT, that partially ripe homegrown melon is as sweet as any store-bought watermelon I have ever had. I can only imagine what it would have been if I had left it on the vine until it was fully ripe!

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Finally
got a cabbage! Tomato, first cucumber, think I left it on the vine one
day too long, some of the little broccoli after the big heads were taken
off, a couple of sugar snap peas, and some pole beans.
Having a
fresh salad for lunch after adding some store bought lettuce (shameful)
and perhaps going out and nabbing 1 tomato a day early. Then for dinner
5 spice chicken (Chinese) with cabbage, broccoli, bean, carrot, onion
(last two from farmers market) stir fry and rice. :o) Yum!!

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Beautiful cabbage, Krazi! I'm half afraid to grow cabbage for fear of the slugs that will want to live inside of it ugh. They lived inside my head lettuce, anyway. After that, I decided only to grow leaf lettuce.
Today I made up some yummy zucchini patties (although I used half zuc and half yellow squash) with onions and peas on the side. I was going to get pictures, but totally forgot about it. It's such a good feeling to know I'm providing food for my family!

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
My first cabbage, about two weeks ago, did have slugs in the bottom, so I peeled leaves until there were no more slugs. Was beautiful. then I cut it in half and did a little judicious paring, made great cole slaw.

We had a menu change because I got lazy.
1 1/2 C pasta (7 minute elbow macaroni)
1 C cut up green/yellow beans (1/2 inch cuts)
1 C cut up sugar snap peas (1/2 inch cuts)
1 small cucumber quarter lengthwise, then thinly sliced
1 Sweet Banana Pepper diced
1 C cherry tomatoes, sliced in half
1 carrot, cut into a small dice
1 C diced cooked chicken
2 slices thick cut deli ham cut in 1 in squares
1/2 - 3/4 C mayo
3 Tblsp white basalmic vinegar
salt and pepper
Romaine lettuce, several leaves, sliced into thin strips
Bring water to a boil, add dry pasta and cut green beans, cook 6 minutes, add sliced sugar snap peas, cook 1 minute.
Drain and rinse in cool water, then drain well.
Place in large bowl, add cucumber, pepper, tomatoes, carrot and diced meats.
Mix mayo and basalmic vinegar, add salt and pepper to taste, mix into pasta, veggie and diced meats. Chill 15 to 30 minutes. Just before serving add sliced romaine.

Nice looking carrots, Unmadecastle. Wish I had a pork roast ready. I have been canning fresh tuna all day and the house smells awful.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Here is my haul from the last 2 days:
The bag is a gallon-size, and with what I already had in the fridge from earlier pickings I have one crammed gallon bag full of Tender Pods and Dragon's Tongues! The cukes were hiding under leaves - I didn't even know I had any!

GG, what a great haul! Please tell us more about dragon tongue beans, flavor, how you cook them, etc. I've never heard of them. Also, what is the purple "ball" hiding amongst the cucumbers? Nonna

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Nonna - the purple 'ball' is a kohlrabi. The Dragon's Tongue beans are an heirloom bush bean that when ready to pick has a cream colored pod with purple streaks. It is a good tasting bean but unfortunately loses most of the purple when cooked. Since I posted the pics I went out and pulled 4-5 onions as well.
Cooked up part of the haul. Tonight's feast is chicken fried rice with Tender Pod beans, Dragon's Tongue beans, Carrot Week Nantes, and Egyptian Walking Onions. I am trying not to drop rice grains in between the keys as I eat and type!

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Kohlrabi! Well I'll be. G.G., It's been years and years since we grew kohlrabi. Thanks for the reminder (one year a long time ago we grew a crop of kohlrabi because the turnips we tried got infested with some icky worm). Time to try it again, me thinks, next year. Interesting beans, I shall look for seed. Sounds like a delish dinner! We had ratatouille out of the garden last night (except for the bell peppers). Tasty, served it over gluten-free past because my cousin was visiting. Tasty. Nonna
