Hello from an Irish Digger Down Under.

I've been turning over sods for a few years and have now moved to a smaller veggie patch and am looking forward to learning about Square Foot Gardening

square foot gardening is a great idea, especially for people like me forced to go to garden beds anyway because of poor quality native soil. just makes sense, plant high density in loose, friable soil. Only limitation I can see is that large plants like tomatoes or squash are NOT for SFG. There is a lot of good information on this website.
I don't know the particulars about your climate where you live, but consider looking at

http://plantanswers.com/

lots of useful information about gardening there.
and No, I am not affiliated with Texas A&M University. I just know that us in central Texas deal with more gardening challenges than most. Extremes in temperature, poor soil, etc.

Good Day! glad you\'re here

I disagree. Most of us on the forum have grown both squash and tomatos in our SFGs very successfully. Tomatos do best on a trellis and some squash can be trellised. But a lot of us plant a squash in the middle of 2 squares on a corner or outside edge and let the plant "fall" over the edges into the surrounding area keeping the inside of the bed available for other plants. Both do well in 5 gal buckets of the mels mix soilless growing medium.

I would have to disagree as well. Tomatoes and squash LOVE Mel's Mix!!
Most of my tomatoes last year were well over 8-9 foot high. Some over 10.

Hello From Australia Empty Y'all are so right!

Post  hillcountryhick 4/14/2013, 4:45 pm

HillBillyBob and Rooster, y'all are so right! I am not putting enough faith in SFG 6 INCHES. (sounds funny!).......SFG is a perfect answer for me to be able to grow lots of veggies in a limited amount of space. I will "push the envelope" of my mind and grow bigger plants more densely, in a shallower soil. My so-called deeper beds of 10, 12 and 16 inches are amended to Mel's mix for the top 6 inches or so as much as possible and I will try and maximize their output. I will plan around the aesthetics of using flat trellises more, less tomato towers and bamboo teepees. Thanks for reminding me of the benefits and wonders of SFG. Hello From Australia 1280598131
