Another Newby

Hi! We're starting a new SFG. My husband just built the first box today, a 2x12 foot box that we're going to plant our vining veggies in. We've got plans for tomatoes, pole beans, and maybe some squash. Do zucchini form vines? We grew yellow crookneck squash years ago, but don't remember if they vine or not. I don't think they do. Am I wrong?

Anyway, I look forward to learning from others on this forum.

Welcome to the forum.
The zucchini and the yellow summer squash I grew did not vine tho there may be some rare varieties that do. Winter squash has lots of feet of vines, like butternut.
For other vining crops, try cucumbers.

Yes! We have cucumbers on the plan, too. I forgot about those.

I did Kentucky Wonder Pole Beans last year and they grew great and they need a trellis. Also, if it is not too late plant peas too since they vine.

Hopefully, you have bought Mel Bartholomew's Square Foot Gardening Book. study

It is a gardener's bible.

The crookneck squash and zucchini won't trellis, but the stem will continue to grow so it will need a rather large area. Last year I gave mine 9 square feet, along with my zucchini (they are about the same size at maturity) and they took every inch of it!!

Good grief! 9 square feet!! I have Mel's new book (got the first one years ago; I like this one better) but haven't yet looked at the charts for how much space different plants need and other stuff about the details. I know in my zone it's about time to start seeds indoors.

Squash = sprawl. I plant my squash outside of the regular SFG.

Zucchini and summer squash are wide plants. I, too, use 9 sq ft for mine in a corner of a bed so they can hang over when they get too big.
Another Newby 07-03-10

This is my Black Beauty zucchini on 7/3 which is still early in the season. I tucked in some marigolds in the near corner square and tried a geen pepper to its right. The green pepper was shaded out pretty quickly so it didn't produce. I would have done better with some lettuce under those big leaves. I try to get something around those big plants so I don't feel I've wasted space. Radishes will do well under the leaves, too.
