Hello!

I've got spring fever! I am preparing 6 4x4's for my new gardening endeavor. I have never had a garden before so I am a bit intimidated. I plan on planting 3 for spring and adding 3 more in April for my summer stuff. Yesterday my hubby and I built the boxes. Today, it is off to looking for Mel Mix ingredients.

I live in Angier, NC and my yard is pure clay. I look forward to just ignoring it. Last fall I planted a couple of trees and that clay just about killed me Smile.

This week I plan on planting lettuce, beets, spinach, maybe some bok choy, swiss chard. I am not sure if I've waited too late for peas, broccoli and cabbage.. I'm looking into what else I can get in the ground now.

I look forward to reading what's on this forum.

Another newby in NC Empty Welcome

Post  ander217 2/19/2011, 7:04 am

Welcome to the forum, Heidi.

I think you're in the Middle South, right? I'm your regional host for the Mid-South. You can check out our thread on the regional forum for gardening info more specific to your area.

It's always exciting to welcome another new SFG'er to the forum. This is my second year of SFG after many years of row gardening, and the forum was really helpful to us in getting started last year.

Keep us posted on your progress, and remember that we love to see photos.

Welcome to another Carolina family. I envy you southerners your earlier spring.
I'm sure you'll find the experience with SFG a lot less intimidating than trying to grow thru heavy clay in a row garden.
Good luck.

So nice to have you here. Many of us have found using the "All New Square Foot Gardening" method to be a great way to save time and hard labor. It is especially nice when you don't have to deal with your native soil, or lack thereof.

Planning six 4 X 4's is wonderful. Since you have already built the boxes, once your Mels Mix is completed, your hard work is done. Then you get to plant seeds, water your plants, check them for pests, admire your plants, and later, start harvesting those wonderful fresh veggies and herbs.

Please keep us posted on your progress, and we I love you pictures

Another newby in NC Empty wind delay

Post  HPartin 2/19/2011, 6:27 pm

I am so ready to get started. I've got all the ingredients for Mel's Mix. Unfortunately, it really windy today to I wasn't able to mix it. Hopefully tomorrow.

I picked up so cauliflower, Kale, and broccoli and several kinds of seeds at Logan's Trading in Raleigh. I've never been there: it is one happening place on a Saturday morning. It was nice being there with everyone else. Lots of optimistic gardners were there Smile.

I dont usually do yard work on Sundays but I've got an ox in the ditch! Wind blow away!
