Tomato Stem normal?

I found these little "protusions" on one of our tomato plant stems. I've looked at different sites to identify but have not come across anything yet. They remind me of barnacles that would grow on the bottom of a boat. These however are like little white fingers on the stem. Is this normal or a disease?

Renee, that's normal. It's just the tomato plant putting out more roots. If for some reason that branch got broke off, you could put it in dirt and it would root fast.

I have some Triple L indeterminate tomatoes that are 2+ feet taller than their support cage. They are covered with blossoms and some of the lower stems are already being damaged by heavy green tomatoes.

I was wondering when and how I should "lop off" the tops to restrain growth?

Hmm, if this was in my garden, I would put in a 6 foot stake for extra support and probably lop it off around September 1-7.

by lop do I just cut cleanly at a point I want... like a hedge? Would I be trying to stabalize the main stalk with the 6' pole? The plant itself is over 8' at this point.

What I am trying this year is to turn the plant around after it gets to 7 feet and train it OVER and then down another post.
The other thing i am going to try as my plants get too tall, is to remove all the lower stems and let the stem lie on the ground and rety up the main stem, a few feet further up
I will try to get pictures to explain.

If you have it pruned to a main v vine and you cut the top off it will send out side shoots. I would let it keep growing and give it support so you keep getting tomatoes. To lop off the top will encourage the fruit and new side growth. A few years back my indeterminate tomatoes got over 10 feet.

Hopefully the green tomatoes will start ripening. So far I've only had Roma and cherry tomatoes

What a great idea! And just in time. A couple of my maters have outgrown their stakes so I strung a line across the box connecting the tops of 2 poles at the corners, thinking they might go along that way. But it seemed kinda far fetched to me. Going down would be so much easier! Like Topsy Turvey. Tomato Stem normal? 998388915
