Main stem of tomato plants

How do you tell which stem on a baby tomato plant is the main one? When I plant in the ground, I want to be sure I remove any suckers and just have the main stem, but I don't know how to tell everything apart.

Good video, Farmer Valerie. And key point number one is they have to grow a little bit before you start pinching them back.

My tomatoes are brand, brand new sprouts - as in still waiting for some of them. I am impatient, but at least I have some stuff started!

If it is an indeterminant type of tomato you just have to wait a few weeks and it will make itself known. It is not necessary under normal conditions to prune the day you plant your seedling in the ground. You will easily be able to see the little suckers growing out the the crook where the leaf stems emerge from the main stem. That being said, before you prune anything, check and double check to be sure the stem you are aiming for removal is really the one you want to remove. Shocked
