I have 4 boxes - each has 4 tomato plants. The tomato plants in 3 of the boxes are doing great - thick, healthy, thriving. However, the 4 plants in the box where I had lettuce planted this spring are thin and weak, they barely look like they're going to make it. Well I was lazy and left the lettuce in the box long after I should have (it got bitter). I finally pulled out the lettuce, and as I was doing it, I was finding long roots from the tomatoes stretched over into the next square into the lettuce. That lettuce was choking them out!!! Stealing all of the water. After just a few days of pulling it the tomatoes have recovered very well, it's pretty amazing.

I had no idea lettuce did not play well with others.

lettuce plays just fine with others, but summer is not its best season and it spreads its roots as far as possible to seek water in order to survive the heat.
