Lettuce, Do I really have to???
I planted a second square of leaf Lettuce seeds last month 3 or 4 seeds to a hole
and it appears that every seed has sprouted so I have to ask... Do I really have
to thin them or can I be greedy and let them all grow? I have never grown any
thing but tomatoes before so all this new Veg is not only Great but confusing.

Howdy Hoggar:
For optium grouth each plant needs it's room, however, if planted too close together the plants will "fight it out" and grow anyway. I just Let'm grow and enjoy the harvest.

I had some that I didn't know were 2 in the same space. I went to harvest them and cut 1 and left the other. It's like a buy-one-get-one-free!

When you have enough for a bowl full, I would cut them back. They do need room to get bigger...
this is called having your lettuce and eating it too

Mel says if you harvest the small outside leaves you can plant them closer together. That's what I do since the plants never get full size they don't require so much room. I guess it just depends how close they are.

Re: Lettuce, Do I really have to???
LOL 3 - 4 seeds to a hole and it looks like they all came up I'll let them grow and harvest
off the bigger ones until there s only one left in each spot then Ill take leaves like we have
been doing in our other lettuce square where I transplanted my early indoor sprouts.
We've had four salads out of that square and are about to get another batch, to bad the
spinach cant keep up and the tomatoes are not near ready.
