What's Your Favorite Lettuce Or Lettuce Blend?
It's the time of year many are getting ready to start sowing their lettuce seeds. What lettuce or lettuce blends are your favorite that you'll be going with this year?
I think my all time fav is the Rocky Top Blend.
Lolla Rosa is also another favorite.

My first year growing lettuce I loved Buttercrunch.
Last year my new fav was Flashy Butteroak.
This year I'm trying about a dozen new varieties, including Lollo Rossa and a number of butterheads.
I grow several different types at a time so I'm usually eating an ever changing blend.

First yes first year, all i grew was Black Seeded Simpson. It is a leaf type, very dependable.
Last year, I grew mesclun, BSS, and Matchless, a butterhead. Clear fave was Matchless. Nice texture and flavor. The mesclun was a mixture of some leaf lettuces, chard, spinach. Not a fan.
This year I have 6 in, BSS, Matchless, Flashy Butteroak, Mervaille de Saisons Quattro, All Year Round, and Green Ice. I can't wait to see what my favorite is!

All time faves are Little Ceasar, Grand Rapids and Rouge d'Hiver.
They are the winners in my garden! The latter 2 will sometimes grow 3 seasons.

I like this story about Grand Rapids:

Baker Creek has White Silesian (one of their more expensive lettuces, though, so I haven't tried it) which sounds like a differently selected for sibling:

favorite lettuces
My all time favorite is Magenta. Red tinged leaves, crisp, lovely looking.
We also grow some Italian lettuces, Regina and Rouge d'hiver. We have about 10 varieties at any one time and are currently inundated with lettuce so much that we have been sending grand daughter Lindsey out into the neighborhood giving it away and/or accepting donations. She made $44 the other day from about 5 or 7 houses. People gave her $3 a head. The heads are huge, about 10 inches or more in diameter. This all goes into the fund to feed the chickens.

Isn't it?! You can see why it's my favorite!Scorpio Rising wrote:Yep! Oh by the way, your Flashy Oak lettuce? GORGEOUS! And it isn'tBeetlesPerSqFt wrote:The webpage said they were LED - I didn't catch if it had more details than that.
I have T8s also... and you've reminded me I need to stick something under my latest seedlings (I got lowering thingies, but they took up too much space at their lowest position... so the lights are fixed and I move the plants.)
T up an inch yet...need to know where you got it from...beautiful foliage....

I got my seeds from Baker Creek: http://www.rareseeds.com/flashy-butter-oak-lettuce/
It's a new one, rather than an heirloom, developed by Frank Morton. I don't have a full comprehension of who he is and what he does, but I'm learning to recognize him name as associated with plants I like or want to try.
This year I'm adding another of his, Hyper Red Rumple Waved:
https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/lettuce/lettuce-hyper-red-rumple-waved-organic/
I don't know if my seedlings are still alive out there, but their seed leaves had already turned red by their third day.
Here's a little more about Morton, relevant because he apparently he got his start through lettuces:

Tried different varieties and Little Gem has become our favorite. The sweet taste out performed anything else in my garden.
