Please help me identify these two plants.. I am new to gardening and not sure if these plants are weeds and if I should let them grow in my garden.. Please advise..

Plant #2 looks sorta like basil, and basil is notorious for reseeding. You can tell immediately from the smell of a crushed leaf. Do you have any idea what was in the bed last year? What have you planted in the bed this year? Seeds have to know to wash to areas other than where we planted.

If it's in the way of what you want to plant, it's a weed for your purposes. If you want to see what it eventually becomes, put some in a pot.

I did as you asked- the crushed leaves do not smell like basil (and do not have any peculiar smell as such) Sad

We just moved to this house last month so I don´t know what was in the flower bed last year.. So far this plant is not in the way of anything I am growing but it looks very ugly..
Like you said, I will pot one of them to see what the plant becomes if I decide to get rid of the rest.. Smile

Ah so, flowers. Not as up on my flowers as I could be. But now I definately think you should pot up clumps of the plants and see what they might be. Ask the neighbors if they remember anything blooming there last year. They might just be some good perenniels.

Cutting across a plant stem also gives you ideas of what it is from the shape ... round stem , oval or square stem etc and also any liquid that comes out such as milky white , clear , sticky sap etc.

There are numerous plant identifier sites on the internet perhaps choose one that deals with garden flowers .

Plant one has pretty whorled leaves so it could end up being a flowering perennial of some sort. Worth keeping until it flowers to see what you get. I may be able to help you id it once you get flowers. Joe pye weed is a pretty wildflower with whorled leaves?

Plant 2 looks like poplar suckers to me. Is there or were there any larger poplar trees in your yard? Poplars reproduce vegetatively by suckering from roots. Not something you'd keep if you don't want more poplar trees.

If number one is in the mint family it will have square stems the leaves in the second picture of it look mint to me. plant two looks like hog peanuts a twining vine that will climb on its neighbors will flower and if in good sunlight will develop a seed pod like beans with around 3 beans in it the seeds/beans are edible if the plant was correctly identified. The pods develop below ground if in poor sunlight. They were a bit of a staple to some Indians but they let small rodents stockpile the beans below ground then raided their cache but did repay the rodent with corn or another more obtainable morsel. Google will provide more pictures and information on them. While not particularly invasive they do pose a nuisance because they are a vining plant
