As I'm a single person household, a normal head of Romaine will last me a week to 10 days. I'm thinking of growing a little 6" high variety that's available from several organic seed companies.

Any thoughts?

I have never tried the 6" variety so I cannot help you there. But, you do not have to harvest the whole romaine lettuce at one time. You can just cut off what ever number of leaves you need for that night's dinner. The lettuce will keep growing. Whenever you want more lettuce, just cut some more leaves off the outside of the "head".

I am growing 4 different varieties of lettuce. Whenever I want a salad, I just go out to the garden and cut a few leaves off each variety of lettuce and it makes a nice salad.

Luci

I have not tried the mini. I harvest Romaine like yolo, taking the outer leaves while they are still less than 6 inches. As long as I have several Romaine plants, my DH and I can have salad every few days.

Of course I also grow 4 to 6 varieties of leaf or butterhead lettuce so between them all, once the leaves start growing, it is salad every night with very few plants. Right now I have Parris Island Cos Romaine (nice crisp leaves) and Drunken Woman Frizzy Headed, a butterhead lettuce (softer with a bit of red at the leaf edges). I try to grow some greens, reds, some tinted with a bit of red and at least one deeper green. Need some color in my salad.

No but I am growing tom thumb a mini butter head for the first time this year and red romane I'll keep you posted on how they turn out. Crazy weather already this year. We had a very warm winter and then a late killing frost. It was 84 today and the low here will be 42 tomorrow night. I have know idea if it will be too hot and make my lettuce bolt or not.Shocked

Thanks all for your input.

@Yolos: I had thought about doing the cut-and-come-again approach, but then that wouldn't leave me anything I can grill.

@Furbalsmom: You've solved my dilemma...will just pick it when it's 6" high and grill away whenever I want to Very Happy

@shannon1: I'm going to try the tom thumb, as well!

Luci, if you are going to pick the whole Romaine head at 6 inches, try planting them 9 to a square instead of 4 as they will be harvested before they overcome the square.
