Unless you already did!
Had wife in the ER after a knee surgery with blood in her
ER doc said it was an ulcer bleed from the Aspirin.
My wife's talking to her boss boss "Hematology doc" suggested it could be E-coli. He agreed.
Pretty sure they are correct because my daughter has the same exact symptoms and they both had the romaine Friday.
Started with nausea, lower abdominal cramping all the way around to the back and a few other symptoms I wont mention.
Starting cipro today and will know for sure after the stool samples.
She said, "I am trying to eat healthy and this is the second time I got sick", I said, "dont ever buy lettuce again"!!!
You want to eat healthy! grab a ribeye!!

Got the romaine warning here in Canada as well. Seems ridiculous to me that there are so many of these e-coli warnings in a modern society. The owners of the businesses responsible for the problem should be made to eat their own compromised product.

We now have a confirmed case of e-coli from lettuce illness here in Ottawa, Canada. Mrs TD almost bought some romaine earlier this week but settled on an iceberg lettuce instead.

I read that washing it with hydrogen peroxide will kill it. Wonder if that's true...?

Hi Cape Coddess, what does a package of romaine lettuce cost? Worth the risk? Here is a link where they talk methods but doesn't seem like anything one can do from home. Plus they only seem to give the go ahead on salmonella and I think e coli might be made of sturdier stock.
https://www.foodpoisonjournal.com/food-poisoning-information/coming-clean-on-washing-vegetables-u-of-g-food-scientist-graduate-student-have-found-an-effective-wa/
Another link, this one to the CDC and it seems they haven't been able to link it back to any specific source. Plus you are talking about a population of over 300 million and you have 32 people infected and I have to ask the question, how many people don't wash their hands after going #2 or handling something that could already be infected with e coli? Just saying. Here is the link to the CDC.

I am waiting for the all clear before my next salad. I do think with the record keeping ability of computers should make every box of produce traceable back to the field from which it came, domestic or foreign. We seem to err on the side of caution, after being cautioned I would be foolish to err then. I seem to remember a few scares that were more of a Chicken Little fit than actual disease outbreak. These scares cost farmers money. I would like to have the CDC educates us on all the vectors that are possible. Plus the number of lawsuits that follow might be a statistic to know.

Re: CDC says don't eat romaine!
In my opinion, it's one thing to recall or put out a warning on a line of romaine or romaine containing products that used a crop of romaine traced back to a farm. But, to put out a general warning is financially devastating to all romaine producers across the country.

Re: CDC says don't eat romaine!
As with all salads from unknown sources it's often recommended to use a baby bottle sterilant or saline mix to sterilize the crop by immersion for a couple of minutes then rinse it out before prepping and eating it .
Soft fruit is the same but it kills strawberries.
It's the fact that it's the whole group of Romain lettuces ( not just one single marketed & ready wrapped brand ) that has made me wonder is it an idiotic false news thing or has the E.coli bug been found in very high concentrations on lettuces from several areas of the locality on lettuces now held / recently supplied from a certain large central fresh food distribution depot.
If the latter.... has someone has deliberately put a concentrated culture of the bacteria on the lettuce crops that have come into the place for distribution to smaller outlets in time for your Thanks Giving Day ? .
Fine shredded crunchy white Dutch cabbage with a minute sprinkle of fine salt mixed in a bowl of it stored in the fridge to get chilled through then taken out of the fridge & served make a nice alternative to expensive winter lettuces & tastes much better too .

Actually, its just poor or lazy supply chain management. CDC has narrowed it down to central coast Cali, which really isnt narrowed, its factory farming because for the time period virtual all roamine products nation wide were coming from centeal coast Cali.
So basically, economy of scale.works for viruses too.

Re: CDC says don't eat romaine!
Are the lettuces grown in soil , in a growth medium in nutrient fed racks or are they grown on floating blocks of flower arrangers" Oasis " and floated along 100 yard long shallow tanks of hydroponic nutrients that are monitored & adjusted every few minutes 24/7 ?No_Such_Reality wrote:Actually, its just poor or lazy supply chain management. CDC: 'Some' romaine lettuce now safe to eat
Now CDC says some Romaine is safe to eat, if consumers can figure out where it came from.

Re: CDC says don't eat romaine!
The thing about washing: sometimes it is the method that is used to grow it. Remember the spinach E. coli recall from a few years ago? It was actually grown in dirt that was fertilized with contaminated manure, so the bacteria were inside the cells and unable to be rendered safe via washing. The stuff was grown in Mexico, to my memory.

Well, it's that time of the year. Romaine lettuce from Salinas, CA is on the recall list.
I'm glad I have fall/winter lettuce growing this year. Of course, the green Romaine is 3 feet tall and bolting due to the warm fall weather.

Oh no! How does this keep happening? Especially since they're not saying it was organic romaine. You'd think the one advantage of commercially grown, non-organic lettuce is that it wouldn't have E. coli.

More news posted today. It looks like the crisis has passed and we can eat romaine.

You are right, plantoid, tastes better, is crisper, and the cabbage lasts a lot longer than any lettuce so works out cheaper.
