Trouble finding Compost Empty Trouble finding Compost

Post  GrdnGrl 3/3/2012, 3:13 pm

This is my first year gardening and I don't have any "homemade compost" yet. I am having a very difficult time finding compost out here in Northern VA. I did get 2 different kinds from the Farm and Home center. One is a manure source but they don't know what animal it comes from, and the other is leaves mixed with top soil. Can I use a compost that has top soil mixed in? Does anyone know where else I can get good, possibly organic compost? I already struck out at Lowes and Home Depot. They both have manure.....may be the same manure I got from the Farm and Home place.......

On the bright side, I did secure the Vermiculite and Peat Moss. Got to celebrate the small wins.

I use the Moo-nure from either Lowes or Home Depot as one of mine. Also be on the lookout for Black Kow, Black Hen and the Mushroom compost sold by the Black Kow company. I've seen all 3 at some Lowes stores. Try Ace Hardware and Southern States. They might carry something.

Ace Hardware also carries "Humus", which is finished compost. It's excellent and inexpensive. Just my two cents.
Of course, I an now in Alabama, there are no Ace stores, and compost sources are super scarce.

I'm new to SFG, but had a thought that you might be able to find free rabbit manure, which doesn't need to be composted. You could ask for it on freecycle or craigslist. I'm sure there are lots of bunny owners that would like to get rid of it. Some people use pine shaving bedding, which probably isn't ideal because then you would have to compost it to break down the shavings, but some people have wire cages and the droppings just fall underneath the cage, so they would have just plain manure.

If you aren't familiar with freecycle, there are many freecycles for different areas that are run through yahoo groups. If you check on the yahoo groups site for freecycle and the name of your town (or nearby towns if your town doesn't have one) you will probably find a local one. People there offer things or request things and it's all for free.

I haven't tried it, because we own a rabbit and know a breeder to get more manure from, but if you're desperate I thought you might want to try it.

I would not use anything with soil in it. It is not something you want in your SFG. You want to try and stay as pure as you can on the 3 way Mel's Mix formula.

To find compost, do a search on Craigslist for "compost". I did a search in Virginia and found several sources. There is even someone giving some free compost away. Before you acquire it make sure to ask them what's in it.

I work at a Menard's store and so far I have found we have some bags of manure (will have to read more on the label) and we have the grossest smelling stuff on earth....Chickety Doo-Doo, I had to tape up some bags the other day and ended up being the one holding the bag shut and got that "crap" all over me and stunk really really bad for the rest of the day. I still want to get some for my garden though...LOL!!!

We also have buffalo loam and some little bottles of worm poop. I don't think I will use the worm poop we have since the bottles are so small and it would probably cost me a fortune to get enough. I will have to look at some other stores around and see what else I can find.

Mel's Mix does not contain top soil or sand. I would think there would be nurseries, feed stores or Farm and Tractor or Southern States somewhere close like Front Royal or Winchester with compost available. Of course I moved from N VA too many years ago.

I'm in northern VA also and have not found much. I found black low at the meadow Farms in leesburg. I got Leafgro from home depot. I got a random unspecified "manure compost" from southern states in Brunswick md. My brother brought up vermiculite for me from Blacksburg. Still looking for more compost.

Black Kow distributes in VA. Email to info@blackkow.com to check on where you can get Black Kow, Black Hen, Black Velvet Mushroom or Organic Brands Mushroom. Include your city and state in the email.
