I warm my beds by covering with thick clear vinyl plastic right down to the ground. Its amazing how much quicker the soil warms with plastic. I want to start my cool-season crops early enough to grow before the heat of summer or an unusually warm spring can destroy them.
Even with snow on the ground, the plastic is doing its job warming the soil.
