When is it safe to plant in Montana. LOL
May 31 2011 we was greeted with a white covering on all the roofs this morning. The mountains that surround us have new snow and the bird bath is frozen. The only thing up in the Raised Garden Beds is radishes and turnips the Beds where planted May 22.

Short season crops

That is the reason for the hoops to extend the season because we can get a frost by Sept.
We have carrots, beets, spinach, beans, lettuce, turnips, mostly root crops.

Goodness, and there was me thinking I had a short season. I hope the fabulous view makes up for having to defrost your birdbath.

I saw a neat video on youtube about extending the season. I can't find it right now, but will keep looking.
The hoops are an obvious must up there. But, rope lights and some thermal mass may help a little, too.
Bottom line, though, is to get your fall crops loaded up in late summer when they grow well. That way you have a lot to stagger a harvest with as the cold weather slows everything down. Once harvested, it just won't recover well. But, you already know that I'm sure.
Happy Gardening!

Your stone/cement beds are beautiful. They look like they'll be there for a while.
I am envious of cooler weather while we are having a record-breaking string of 90 degree days.
