Lol. I actually saw some kitchen compost containers at Lowe's on Saturday. They were $20 and didn't have the carbon filter set up, and if memory serves they were the gallon size. I still like my paid for:

It's that time to be seriously collecting all means of organic matter to make the compost our SFGs thrive on.

The silver one is on our kitchen counter, emptied nightly. The other 2, along with 3 more, are what I take to work and my co-workers fill one up daily with their scraps along with the office coffee grinds.

Here's my kitchen container, it was a freebie from local council when I did a composting and worm farming workshop.
Show us your kitchen compost container - Page 4 9fdc31cc8a950654a537b593ac4e7e74

And here are my outside bins.
A tumbleweed composer that we've had for years
Show us your kitchen compost container - Page 4 E5e64dd472c90f81e4a930a5f0ec0f49

And just behind it, my new addition which was also a freebie from council
Show us your kitchen compost container - Page 4 B13d82f3844214177b7d791d6e12a3f1

We've found over the years that one compost bin wasn't enough as we would keep adding scraps until it was too heavy to turn and then it would get dumped out somewhere with lots of uncomposted bits in it.

So yesterday I finally set up the new bin and emptied the tumbleweed into it and that will now sit there until it's all beautifully composted and ready for use and all scraps will go into the tumbleweed.

CC you posted whilst I was typing, my old container was exactly the same as yours. It was a bin that we had no use for elsewhere in the house so we used it for compost for many years. I only threw it out because it was getting a bit rusty in places and the new one I was given is easier to clean.

Erica, my silver one was from my gf when she was going to throw it out as it was too small for her to use as a garbage pail. BUT, I don't like it too much.

I need one that looks good (to appease the mother) and that you can make it open with one hand and then it will snap shut. Does yours do that?

That was the problem I had with my silver bin too, it wasn't easy to use one handed.

The new on is great, the little lip in the front makes it easy to lift one handed and the lid is hinged so it falls down as soon as you let go. If I'm peeling lots of veggies then I move it out from the wall and flip the lid all the way open.

i keep my kitchen compost materials in a paper bag in the bottom of the kitchen freezer. no flies and no smell. as the moisture in the material freezes, it expands, causing the cell walls to burst. as the materials thaw in the composter, they becomes mushy and decompose very quickly. when the bag is full i take it to the composter, still frozen. i use whatever food-grade paper bags i have on hand--usually bags that held flour or sugar or other such--sometimes i just fold newspaper into a bag shape if i don't have a bag handy.

Green Stoneware Compost Crock
I got from gardeners.com

Show us your kitchen compost container - Page 4 Compos10

It is one gallon size. Plenty large enough for hubby and I and the scraps I get when I have the grands. I dump it in a lidded kitty litter bucket outside till I have enough to use. Then I either put it in the tumble composter or on the pile.
I have little crocks like this everywhere so it fits in with my decor! And with the filters there is no smell at all!

I just got mine today!! It's an alginate container from work (dental office) so it's a white plastic can with a screw on lid. I wrote 'compost' on the top, and a few things like "fruit peels. coffee grounds, tea bags' so people at work would put their stuff in it so I can take it home every night and feed the bin.

When we are finished with the Folger's coffee at work I'll grab those two jars too...I have my tree paint in one of those..they are really handy!

Free bucket from grocery store (most of them also come with lids)

Every time I go to the grocery store, I ask for buckets & coffee grounds. Rarely do I strike out.

I have continued to write compost items on the top of my portable compost can..the people at work are learning something about compost. One woman refused to put her orange peels in and left them in a bowl next to the jar..she said she was 'weirded out' by it and was afraid she would see mold! I told her it's my transport jar and I take it home and dump it every day, rinse and repeat.

Another employee learned she can put her banana peels in. Someone else learned about putting in tea bags.

I tell them "Feed the Farm, and the Farm feeds you!"

I won a Welch's instant win sweep a couple of years ago that came with a mini garden and compost kit. In it was this compost pail: Garland 2.5 Gallon Odor-Free Recycled Plastic Compost Caddy. I just took out our first pail full tonight. Only took a week to fill it up. I like it. No odor problems, it has a carbon filter. It fits perfectly under our sink.

I just started. I'm doing bokashi, and I'll branch out from there. I actually have two of the bokashi buckets, a tan one and black one, and a red pail to collect the food scraps until I add them into the mix. Very Happy (I feel so good I'm not throwing it in the garbage anymore!)
