Kitchen Waste Compost

I would like to start composting but I would never have enough stuff to start a 3x3x3 pile. What do you do with kitchen waste while building up enough to start a compost? I have a little dried grass. I can gather up some dried leaves. I have coffee grounds. I can make a trip out to a farm to get some manure.

Is it okay to pile it all together if I don't have enough to make a 3x3x3 pile? Can I add to it whenever? What do you do with your kitchen produce waste when you don't have enough for the compost? Once you do have enough for a pile and get it going, can you keep adding to it? When do you stop adding things so it can all decompose? Have I asked enough questions?

I live in a townhouse and have a small backyard. I think its 18 feet wide. 3x3 is going to be the preferred size of the container that I will be making. This is going to be a small experiment. I plan on turning it often. I swear I have done lots of googling but everything seems to be from people who have lots of space.

When I lived in a town house condo, I made a 2x2x3 compost bin out of an old shipping pallet and stuck it out back on a patch of dirt next to the patio. I preferred this to a plastic bin because I just didn't want a plastic bin in my little garden, I didn't like how it looked.
It was not hard to make it. If you have a hammer and a saw you can make one too. When your kitchen container is full of scraps, dump it into the bin and just throw a little dirt on to cover it (this will keep the smell and flies down). Just keep adding what ever organic matter you can find, chop it up and throw it in. By the end of summer you should be on your way to compost.

I add as the scraps become available. Each year I save a bag of leaves to stagger the greens/browns with.

I have 2 trashcan composters going. Started them last summer. I used 1 can full to replenish the nutrients in my fall garden.

What camp said. Another thing I do during winter so I don't waste my kitchen scraps, is put them in plastic grocery sacks and then place those into a large garbage bag in the freezer.
