I'm researching and planning on building a solar food dehydrator for this spring. I'll be using some recycled windows. Does anyone have any experience or advice? I'm thinking of trying to use old storm window screen inserts for my trays but I don't know if it's a good idea to use aluminum or vinyl screen for food drying. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There are a lot of different styles of solar food dehydrators out there and there are a lot of plans available on line too! Google and then click images, so much fun to see how everyone else has worked out the kinks of their designs. Please do post photos of your sunny project!
If it was me I would choose either screen and then line it with cheese cloth before putting down the food.

I'm probably doing the same as you. I have a couple of aluminum screens, but I'm not using them just yet.
Since in cooking, it's recommended to not use aluminum pots with acidic foods, I'd definitely not use the aluminum screening material. I'm thinking of just getting nylon screening, and using the frames with that. I'll need new spline, too, since it's too dry and brittle to re-use.
