parsnips in square foot garden? - Page 2 Empty Re: parsnips in square foot garden?

Post  BeetlesPerSqFt 2/23/2018, 7:06 pm

I needed to buy new seeds, so I researched parsnip varieties and here's what I found. It appears that my first year I lucked into a short variety nicely suited to the depth of SFG beds: Turga is listed as being 5-7” long.
Other short (8-10” long) varieties are Guernsey (aka Guernsey Half Long), Albion, Halblange, and Cobham Improved Marrow.
10-12” long varieties: All American, Gladiator, Lancer, Harris Early, and Tender and True
Hollow Crown was listed somewhere as 10-15”, Andover as 12-14”, and White Spear and Student were both capable of reaching 36”...
I purchased All American for this coming season since seeds for the shorter varieties weren’t being sold locally (or were out of stock already!)

Other variations between varieties included: Shape (from the rare, beet-shaped Kral Russian, to “wedge-shaped”, to carrot shaped), How smooth they are, Days to Maturity* ranging from 95 to 130 days, Canker resistance, and How white they are (whiter tends to be associated with less disease resistance.)

The “Days to Maturity” isn’t as crucial for this crop (for my situation at least) as some others:
They can resist frost and many varieties overwinter so I’m not trying to reach maturity before the first frost. And the extra month for maturity between the fastest and slowest varieties falls during a time where I wouldn’t be trying to squeeze in another crop anyhow.

I dug out my remaining Turga parsnips today. Some have a leaf or two of new growth, so I'm a little late. The narrow ones are because I didn’t thin well. The forked one is likely from transplanting a seedling over to a spot that either didn’t germinate or the previous seedling got eaten/killed. Only one parsnip has vole damage, its crown wasn’t as deep as the others.

They look yummy.

I ordered Gladiator from Territorial. I liked the words' fast germination for a parsnip'. I have also found that F1 hybrids tend to be more fool proof for the first time growing something. I wonder how much the different varieties differ in taste.

I dug up my parsnips on Friday. They were not very wide, but were long. We had some roasted with carrots I also had just dug. They were no harder than the carrots to grow (and like the carrots could of stood being thinned). My they were tasty! DH wants me to grow lots more next year. I am on it!

I am growing parsnips for the first time. They are in one of my old style SFG beds. Looking forward to digging them up.
