Coco Fiber

Interested in using soil blocks and have seen coco fiber recommended over peat. Anyone have any input on this?

to the Forum. Do you mean Coir? which is coconut fiber. It is a reasonable alternative, though if you live in North America it doesn't make ecological or economical sense over the sphagnum (peat) moss. Sphagnum is a renewable resource and most of it in the USA is farmed in Canada. Coir has to travel from tropical areas. Having used coir in other situations, I cannot imagine it would be superior to sphagnum in soil blocks. Do you have the block recipe available?

Glad to have another Oregonian on the forum.

Sorry I can't really contribute about the coir. My only experience was using it as a basket liner for flowers. Those were very stiff fibres and I am not sure how well they would work in a seed starting mixture.

We do have several members who use the soil blockers and seem to be very happy with the results. Use the search feature in the top left corner of the page to find posts on soil blockers.

Hope you have had a chance to read ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING. It is filled with simple instructions on preparing your SFG and growing your veggies with less work, less water and very few weeds.
