My favorites, for three reasons: variety of seed, excellent service, family-owned/operated:

Nichols Garden Nursery https://www.nicholsgardennursery.com/store/

Territorial Seed Company http://www.territorialseed.com/

Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co.: http://bakercreekheirloomseed.wordpress.com/

TomatoFest: http://store.tomatofest.com/ (tomato seeds only)

And heirloom seeds available from foundations specializing in the protection from extinction of heirloom food plants:

Seed Savers Exchange: http://www.seedsavers.org/

Seeds of Change: http://www.seedsofchange.com/

For garlic starts: Filaree Garlic Farm: http://www.filareefarm.com/

Caveat: most of the above recommendations are on the West Coast, though Baker Creek also has an East Coast store. Enjoy shopping! Nonna

My favorites:

Johnnyseeds

Baker Creek

Territorial Seed

and you can get seeds free from Wintersown.org in the spring.

I got several heirloom varieties from them last spring and I'm benefiting from them right now.

I've ordered from Baker Creek and Territorial before with no problems and decent germination rates. One piece of advice I will pass along: don't order a single packet at a time because shipping and handling can be a killer.

Baker Creek is ahead of the curve in having both a West Coast and an East Coast presence. Don't know if that has anything to do with it, though I do prefer to deal with more local companies and try to visit the companies when we travel near them. Makes it more up close and personal. Nonna

Has anyone had experience with this organic, heirloom seed provider? http://www.ufseeds.com/Our-Company.html It appears to be a small, relatively new company in Indiana. Nonna

I saw this same kinda thread here last year, and looked at Baker Creek, couple others, and settled on Fedco. They are very cheap, and you can tell it by the website. I found the key to using their site is to open two windows, one for an order form and the other to browse and copy item numbers. If you can handle that, you can save about half.

There were several packs of lettuce that went from .70 to 1.50
Free shipping on over $30, (that was me, I went crazy)
$5 on all others.

Green Deer Tongue Fedco $1.10
http://www.fedcoseeds.com/seeds/search.php?item=2740&index=10&search=lettuce&page=1

Green Deer Tongue Baker Creek $2.50
http://rareseeds.com/amish-deer-tongue-lettuce.html

Very satisfied with germination, etc...
I plan on ordering some potatoes from their other company, Moose something....
I don't work for this company, just a happy cheapskate.

BTW, if you haven't grown snow peas before, they are the best thing to eat in the garden...

Post  jcpen 8/4/2011, 4:29 pm

here is what look for in a seed company
seed per pack/weight per packet of the variety i am interested in.
mel gives the example of half pack of radish seeds being 200 seeds.
my option is that beginners should go with varieties that are time tested
and not newest latest and greatest.
once have a few seasons under you belt with certain crop then you can get
fancy. which goes with basic idea of the square foot garden start small,
limit how much space you use, do not take on more work then you can handle.
