First time growing pole beans, i don't understand them!!
I planted about 128 pole beans this year. The 6' H x 8' L trellis was not high enough so now I have this Huge mess hanging down. I have blooms galore but I'm only getting maybe 8-10 beans every other day or longer. I've read that ppl say they are prolific but I'm not really seeing it. Am I missing out on something or have I done something wrong? Thanks
Kim

All I can say is that my beans (the vines) are growing like crazy, and I do have blossoms, but have not gotten any beans yet. When I had an in-ground garden several years back I remember them being VERY prolific - I think they'll produce all of a sudden and then we'll be overtaken. Get your freezer ready.

Also, be sure you're moving the big leaves away to look. First time I grew green beans, I missed a bunch and they were a foot long before I found them!
Purple podded beans for me.

That's what I love about my Dragon's Tongue - hard to miss those cream and purple striped pods!

Ooh, you're right, I did move the leaves away and found a few beans! Not a lot, just a few.
The Japanese beetles are having a field day on my bean leaves, that may be slowing them down. I keep hand-collecting them (the beetles) and feeding them to the chickens. I wonder if putting sugar water out there would attract them into a pail. It would be easier. I'll have to research that.

I just made my trellis out of electrical conduit , like the one in the book. thanks ladies. I have been "digging" behind the leaves and still little results. I'm praying they come thru like everyone has been saying theirs does.

your plants look awesome!!.....maybe they just need more time?.....one question though.....having you been feeding your beans?.....to much fertilizer will cause the green's on the green beans to grow larger and not produce as much veggies.....there is a gardener on you tube that has a video on it....
if i can find the link to the youtube video i will come back and post it....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCZ59jwxRUg
he said green beans dont need to be fed......and he show's an example of two been plants....one that was fed and one that wasnt.....it was amazing at the differnce.....
just thought i would throw that out there just incase......im thinking i may have fed my squash to much....cause i have lots of very large plants with no veggies but...im also in the PNW and we havent had much of a summer
hugs

Thanks Rose but no fertilizer on the beans.Just straight water. I have fed my tomatoes and cucumbers some compost tea about a month ago.
