Pole Beans

Do you guys think it's too late to start pole beans in Central Texas? The beans I planted two months ago are very stunted and have some sort of fungus. Treatment isn't really improving things so I was thinking about pulling the plants and starting over. Any thoughts?

Well, I think green beans grow well in the heat so you could re-plant. What are the signs of the fungus? When you pull the plants, look at the roots. See if they have knots in the roots. Not the knots that can be rubbed off, those are nitrogen bits. I had root-knot nematodes last yr. Green beans are suseptable to these.

If it's just a regular fungus, let the soil dry well before planting. Dip(not soak)seed in clorox before planting. This will prevent any fungus that is on the seed. The soil may be contaminated. Do you have access to some worm castings? If so you could make some worm tea. If supposedly will help the soil tremendesly. I don't know if a organic fungicide is warrented.

Jo do you mean a 10% bleach solution or straight bleach?

I would use straight bleach, but just dip the seed. I did this for my okra seed. They were up out the ground and growing in 2 days.

I took some leaves to the nursery and they said it was fungus. It's been particularly wet so far this season and everyone in the area is having the same troubles. They diagnosed the same fungus on several of my other plants as well. All of the leaves are losing color and turning crinkly.

Would you recommend pulling out the plants, then treating the soil with the worm tea before replanting?

I found a couple links for organic fungus control (plant and human) Very interesting. May be better than worm tea. 1 part of article says you can make a tea from the cornmeal and spray on plants. Depends on how far gone the beans are but it's easy enough to start more seeds. This can be used on any plants that get the fungus! Must be a horticultural or whole grain cornmeal?
