Will my broccoli produce? Empty Will my broccoli produce?

Post  Jilligan 7/4/2011, 9:58 am

So I am trying broccoli for the first time and I'm not sure if it is going to produce. It's probably 18" tall with HUGE leaves but I can't see a head for the life of me:( I am in Kamloops BC and we have had the most pitiful of weather, well below average temps and not a whole lot of sun. It has started to get really nice the last couple of days but I'm not holding out a lot of hope for my broccoli. Should I pull it and give some of my other plants some extra sun or leave it in and hold out a bit more hope.
Thanks,
Jill

Broccoli likes it cool, so if it is still cool where you are just be patient. It should produce eventually. I am in North Missouri and it has been quite hot here, but my broccoli is still giving me nice little heads.

Rabbit got mine while I was away for a 3-day convention. I have a few plants that are now of a size that if the rabbit doesn't get them, they will be my fall crop! My corn is mid-thigh on me, which means it is just about knee-high on the average non-vertically-challenged person, so I am happy with the results of the heatwave that came while I was at the convention. Most things are at least 3-4 inches taller, with some having even more growth than that. Now, if only I could get my broccoli ! Shocked

A similar question was asked last year, with interesting followups 6-8 weeks later.

Just stay patient. Mine seemed to take forever, but eventually they gave me heads.

Thanks All for the advice to just be patient! Boffer, thanks for that link, I saw that it is okay to cut a few leaves, so I might do that. I am getting too much shade on my spring onions and carrots unfortunately.

I've been watching my broccoli grow!!! The day I went out to check it and then pull it if there wasn't a crown/head, imagine my surprise when I dug thru a few of the leaves and found a little head of broccoli! It is now about 6 inches across so I think I might harvest it in the next couple of days. We have had the most pitiful month of July weather wise. The plus to that is, I have hundreds of tomatoes and the cooler weather veggies that I planted a little late are having lots of time to grow before the heat comes and takes over.

Good to hear! My plants are also getting HUGE, but not producing anything yet.

They are seriously enormous - overshadowing all the adjacent squares. It's crazy!

In the north you can usually get two crops of broccoli, one in the early spring and one in the fall.
My early spring crop was a dud because we got some 90 plus days which is highly unusual, so now we're trying for a fall crop. They are doing well sown directly in the soil.
In your area I would think you can plant broccoli seed in June and get a fall harvest so just let your broccoli continue. You may get a good harvest after all.

I'm glad you are seeing results. One of my broccoli just crowned a few days ago, it's growing so fast now. I noticed two others are just starting to form crowns. Mine were transplants so I'm surprised it's taken so long. Best of luck!

With the freakishly hot weather we have been having, I expected my broccoli and cauliflower to bolt. I already harvested the main crowns on the broccoli but have several small shoots growing. Yesterday, I saw that 4 out of 6 cauliflower plants have crowns that are about the size of a golf ball. Here's hoping that they grow well the next few days.
