How much does your SFG produce?

In another blog we've been looking at how many square feet of SFG space we have.
But how much produce do you get from the SFG?

Because it was my first year ever gardening (and it was fun) I tracked everything - this is what I've picked so far from the 16 feet of SFG plus 10 self watering pots that I have. I don't know if it's a good yield or not - but I'm happy!

Cherry tomatoes - 749
Better Boy tomatoes - 17
Beets - 27
Cantaloupe - 3
Watermelon (Baby Bush) - 2
Carrots - 28
Cucumber - 24
Eggplant (White Easter egg) - 19
Lettuce - enough for 15 salads
Okra - 61
Onions - 28 (but they were very small)
Bell Peppers - 37
Herbs - I dried enough to fill 15 spice jars

..and you say you're 'happy'? I say you should submit your harvest to Guinness!

Whoa, you can feed an army on that ! 2 green thumbs up, I can only hope for that yield.

Gloria, the fun part about your list is that you don't know if this was a good year or a bad year for you!

If I scored a load like that out of my box .... I'd have funding approval for a yard full of boxes from the Mrs....

I wish I had kept track like you did.

I had cherry toms that were PROLIFIC...I had 2 plants and I was eating them off the vine while out there in the SFG doing other things...they never made it in the house! I would guess I ate 6-8 each day for the whole summer so a guestimate would be about 400.

I had another tom plant that produced slicers like mad but they were cracked profusely and I couldnt get that to stop. So it probably produced 25 good size slicers and I didnt get to eat 1.

That accounts for 3 squares.

I had a lemon cuke plant in 1 square and a dragon's egg cuke in another and have harvested about 15 lemon cukes and 25-30 dragons egg cukes.

I had Kentucky Wax beans in 3 squares...dummy me put 1 seed in each square LOL and I probably got 200 beans....they were WONDERFUL...I have way more bean squares planned for next spring!

I had 2 squares of radish and 2 squares of green onions harvested 32 radish and 32 green onions. 4 squares of baby carrots...so 32 carrots.

I grew sunflowers in 8 squares that made me the happiest 33 year old in the world.

I grew black eyed susans in 2 squares and was amazed at how big they got.

I screwed up my garlic and onions so we won't discuss that...

My pepppers never stood a chance with the cool temps...

There was more but that is what I feel confidant in saying I harvested. I had ZERO June. It was dark cloudy and rainy 22 days in June here with low low temps...I am gloriously happy with what I harvested.

I'm adding more boxes next year and getting more serious about it.

I didnt have a clue what I was doing...I didnt succession plant or anythig like that and I didnt care what I got! I was estatic just to see the dang seed sprout!

I, too, wish I had kept better records, except I am absolutely NOT a record keeper - a failing, I know.

That said, my box absolutely fed me all summer and I expect it will all winter too. I could have easily eaten only my own vegetables and nothing else. It was a thrill to eat only food that was prepared by another the other day - and hardly a vegetable in sight. Haha.

The ones that made it: tomatoes, black beans, bush and pole beans, onions, beets (I have come to love borscht), carrots, POTATOES!, fresh herbs, garlic, peppers, corn, zucchini, cukes, butternut squash, strawberries, and eggplant. Definitely enough to live on. That said I have 8 boxes so I can plant every month.

I should have kept better records, too.

Broccoli raab -- enough for a number of meals plus give away more, was very happy with it.
Kohlrabi -- didn't do all that well, I think they were crowded.
Swiss Chard -- not even going to guess; LOTS. Grew all year from first planting and was still going 9/30.
Lettuce -- same.
Carrots -- close to 50, though some were small
Onions -- many, though all pretty small (largest not quite ping pong ball size)
Corn -- zero (bust)
Potatoes -- zero (bust)
Watermelon -- zero (bust)
Peas -- few handfuls (bust)
Cukes -- Whoa. They met an untimely death from bugs, but very prolific.
Basil -- I picked lots and then finally made a couple quarts of pesto.
Tomatoes -- lots, but not hundreds. I have a bunch still ripening indoors.
Peppers -- modest harvest, they were still growing when I had to rip them out.
Tomatillos -- a few handfuls, in other words, a pitiful harvest! They were ravaged by the rampicante.
Black Beans -- Enough for numerous meals of string beans, a batch of dilly beans, plus a large basket to shell for dry beans.
Limas -- A large basket.
Rampicante -- I hesitate to guess. The larger fruit are 5 pounds, though I have a few I think are bigger. Many smaller, but... many. Guessing a couple hundred pounds anyway. Perhaps I exaggerate but I don't think so. The neck of one big one (not winter phase) is enough to put up a batch of bread'n'butter pickles.
Strawberries -- the ones I was given, got munched on. The ones I planted from seed this spring have been blooming for the last month or so.
Plus, lots of assorted herbs.

My 42 square feet of garden produced 26 pounds of vegetables this year. This was about one third as much as previous years due to the crazy hot summer we had this year. I figured it was worth about $76.

Oh how fun to see what everyone is growing and how they did! Just having things sprout is so exciting. Even my DH is getting into this and he has NEVER been interested before when I gardened. That in itself means my gardening has been a success.

This year I got:

onions (Spanish) - about 6 lbs. mostly golf ball size I plant them randomly through the garden and flower beds hoping that they really do act as an insect deterrent. Perhaps that is the reason they never get very big.

green onions - didn't really keep track but enough to keep us in green onions all summer

lettuce and mesclun mix - three squares - kept us in salads all summer

chard - one square - still going strong even after the frost. I pick bits of it to throw in the salad when my husband isn't looking because he says he doesn't like it.

corn - four squares - got cobs. One each for DH and I and one for the earwigs. Next year I will plant more and plant it where it gets more sun. Too much shade was the problem.

carrots - four squares - looking good but haven't harvested them yet.

beets - three squares - zilch. Don't know what is up with that. Just a few roots about the size of a nickel and the rest phffffftttt.

dill - one square - beautiful. Used it in salads, etc. all summer and froze a baggie full.

basil - pots - five varieties - didn't get big and bushy like it should but kept me in fresh basil all summer.

oregano, chives, thyme, tarragon, sage - used fresh all summer and then potted some up to keep in the house.

parsley and cilantro - not a single one sprouted.

potatoes - don't know how big the patch is but got about 30 lbs or so.

peas - four squares - one meal. They got some kind of virus or something and all died.

cucs - four squares - about a dozen or so. Powdery mildew and cutworms did a number on these this year.

strawberries - one 4x4 bed - haven't kept track of these either. We just keep eating them. Silly things are still blooming and producing even after the frosty nights although they aren't as tasty as they were in the summer.

tomatoes - 6 plants - We have been eating tomatoes since Aug. and they are still producing. I am very protective of my tomatoes. LOL! But the flavour is so worth it. Don't have a total yet.

radishes - one square and then others randomly planted throughout the garden in little spaces. At least 3 doz. maybe more. Lots of times I just pull them and eat them as I am working in the garden.

The yield is down from what it was last year and I think I need to do something about fertilizing better but I am not disappointed. It kept us in fresh veggies all summer and fall so that is what counts.

I can list by what each variety of plant produced.

1 Big Beef Tomato: 7 feet tall / top cut out= 36 tomatoes
1 Brandywine Tomato: 7 feet tall/ top cut out= 25 tomatoes
1 Sweet Million Cherry Tomato: 6 vines per plant (6 sq ft)=7 feet tall= 38 lbs
1 Big Beef Tomato plant --unpruned-untrained-- caged (9 sq ft)= 5 : 5gallon buckets.(100 lbs)
Black Beauty Eggplant- 22 fruit(4 sq ft) (eggplant takes a break then produces again)4ft tall.
Better Bush Tomato Plant: 16 tomatoes
Super Heavyweight Bellpepper= 12 very large fruits
Golden Jenny Cantaloupe= 8
Fooled You Jalapeno= 52 peppers
Summer Squash=16 per plant==then too hot--kill it off--start over
Okra= 32 pods per plant

You could always move to Alabama-----what you would save on grocery bill would compensate on what it is goin to cost you to move.

Well, just when I think I will leave this land of ice and snow, someone posts something about all kinds of bugs, snakes or some other creepy and even poisonous thing that inhabits those areas. Then I am grateful that God didn't put any of those things in my zone and decide to stay here. LOL!
