Feeling a little naive

I've been wanting to grow potatoes for a while. I tired to get a grocery store potato to start while I've also been looking for seed potatoes. My grocery store potato was a no go and I couldn't find seed potatoes anywhere. I wasn't really sure when to start them so I thought perhaps it was just a little too early. We have a local nursery that is best described as the "snobby" nursery. Things are very over priced and I usually only go as a last resort.

Well today they had a sign that said they had seed potatoes. I reluctantly bought some, they only had one size box 4.4 lb's for $9.99 which felt way too expensive and a lot more than I actually need. I stopped by another local nursery where I usually shop and the guy there told me they had seed potatoes back in March and they didn't last very long before they were sold out. He also told me they were half the price. I asked if I should take them back and he thought I should try them.

I'm wondering, should I just return them? I bought my favorite red potatoes (120 days to maturity which seems awfully late). They had some early to maturity white potatoes which I'm thinking might be better bet, I just don't know.

What would you do?

I'm not an expert at potatoes, but I always feel like things are worth a shot. If you've already got them, why not give it a go and see what you get? It's the best way to learn, I think. Next year aim to plant them in March and see how different that crop is from this year. Good luck!

If it was me, I would chalk up the chat with the nurseryman as a learning opportunity and just plant the reds. That way, you have gained knowledge and will have fresh taters for thanksgiving!

I have new potatoes!! I felt at least two under there, I didn't pull any up. And I think I felt more but not sure. I'm super excited that they did work out. I put them in rubbermade containers filled with MM in our front yard, which only gets morning sun and is shaded during the hot evenings. And it's working out!! I should have some nice fresh home grown potatoes on our thanksgiving table!!
